FOS Gets Physical for Céline

Celine-furniture-BLOG.jpg

Beneath Phoebe Philo’s athletic, streamlined wares for Céline, the designer has her quirks—remember Spring ’13′s fur-lined Birkenstocks or Fall ’13′s tied-sleeve coats? That penchant for the unconventional will soon extend to the brand’s London flagship, which, opening in September, will feature furniture by Danish artist FOS.

“Fashion is a two-faced being. On one side, the value it produces mirrors our time, but on the other, it is a giant retail spider,” FOS (née Thomas Poulsen) told Style.com from Copenhagen. It’s a fitting sound-off for an artist-***-ergonomist who seemingly lives somewhere between fantasy and reality—just look at his oddly storelike installations that skew perceptions of space, purpose, dreams, and cognition. Reinterpreting his vision for an actual sales environment, FOS seamlessly transitioned from what he described as the “phenomenal” world into the “physical” one, creating singular, and surprisingly practical, accents like golden, tubular lamp shades and earthen table stands. FOS added, “This marks the high point in collaborating with Céline. Design has always been a part of my artistic frame, which by its nature is part of fashion’s.”

FOS’ furniture for Céline will be available via special order through London’s Max Wigram Gallery. Price upon request.

Thank you again for updating SANDER! Great, great research.

Two days to Avenue Montaigne opening... I remember taking a photo of the construction site last September. Creating a Céline store seems to be a long process... Exciting to see the results!

I assume the Rue Francois store will stay in business even it is so close to the new one? Closing it would be such a shame as it´s such a unique C-boutique!

Not exactly a Céline shop interior but definitely general ambience... Here´s some inspiring artwork that can be found at Céline HQ in London Cavendish Square. I find it interesting as I see that art preferences can speak for creative values.

* The works that I picked might not be exactly the same but hopefully they offer proper insight.

"I surround myself with images for their emotional qualities," says Phoebe when I meet her at the recently restored Georgian townhouse in Cavendish Square that Celine has made its London headquarters. "I get an energy from their tenderness, strength and glamour that I'm very responsive to." (...) "The contemporary artwork decorating the oval staircase up to Phoebe's office certainly hints at this emotional sensibility." - The Gentlewoman, issue 1

First, at Phoebe´s office:

01 A version of this light piece by FOS at her office wall

" ... and a yellow-neon light work over the marble mantel by the Danish artist FOS that spells out WHERE THERE IS PRESSURE THERE IS FOLK DANCE. "And I like to think it´s true", says Philo, flashing her wry smile." - Vogue US, March 2013

02 Statue by Don Brown

"Perhaps most touching of all, standing on a plinth by the designer's desk is a darling white figurine of the sculptor don brown's wife, Yoko. Her slender, childlike form is dressed in little more than a pair of chunky wedges. They're not unlike the substantial, clog-like footwear that was Phoebe's trademark during her tenure at Chloe, come to think of it, or the wooden-soled platforms that marched down the runway for Celine." - The Gentlewoman, issue 1

"And on the facing wall: a diamond-dust portrait of Joseph Beuys by Andy Warhol.

And in the hallway:

05 "Forever" light piece by Tim Noble and Sue Webster

"Originally commissioned in 1996 by a public arts organisation, it was installed on top of a bus shelter in London’s Tottenham Court Road, flashing brightly to illuminate the grey urban surroundings. Constructed using carnival lights, the bold form of the word Forever signifies advertising’s subliminal communicative power, whereas conceptually, the sculpture plays with notions of everlasting love."

Also included:

-"Against another, a very smart piece by Mexican artist José Dávila featuring Marcel Duchamp precisely excised from a photograph, leaving just his silhouette. (The there/not there thing is very Phoebe.)" -Purple magazine, issue 19

-"Visitors to Celine's London premises are greeted by a seascape courtesy of the aptly-named French photographer Marine Hugonnier..." - The Independent, Saturday 16 July 2011

Please do replenish...

What an absolutely wonderful thread. Hope these haven't already been posted - inside the new Avenue Montaigne store from WWD

Oops! I see cotonblanc is already posting images, so I'll just post the article :) So excited for the new store downtown in NYC!

PARIS — Phoebe Philo has finally bid adieu to Céline’s “temporary” store on Rue François 1er in Paris – after more than four years in the raw, no-frills space – and decamped to a sumptuous, light-filled boutique at 53 Avenue Montaigne.

Roughly double the size of those temporary digs, the new 6,500-square-foot location sprawls over two floors, connected by a coiling staircase in cement and pale oak, and gives ample showcase to Philo’s ready-to-wear, leather goods, footwear, eyewear and costume jewelry collections.

The unit opened to the public today in Céline’s signature low-key fashion: announced via newspaper ads, outdoor advertising, and a mass email.

Residential in feel, the store boasts views of a leafy courtyard, and is appointed here and there with cozy-looking sofas, armchairs, area rugs and potted plants.

The main floor is dedicated mainly to leather goods, including three travertine shelves exalting versions of its most popular handbag styles in precious skins.

Leather totes and cross-body bags hang from a sculptural steel rack by the Danish artist known as Fos, who also designed the blob-like terra-cotta flower pots, brass light fixtures, some shelving units, brass trays and even a water decanter and matching glasses.

Upstairs, shoppers alight on a large area dedicated to footwear, a low bench ringing a hefty pillar. Next to it is a spacious rtw salon, its living-room vibe heightened by the sofas and pale parquet: broad planks of Danish oak arranged in a point de Hongrie pattern.

Chunky marble and onyx cubes are dotted throughout the boutique, and large slabs of colorful stone are embedded in the floor under clothing rails, and wrapped around pillars.

Céline declined to provide first-year sales projections, though it has said in the past that the François 1er location was its highest-growing unit worldwide.

The high-profile Paris location – next to new-look boutiques by Saint Laurent, Fendi and Chanel – is one of 15 new Céline stores planned this year for the French firm, part of luxury group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

Among scheduled openings are a 7,000-square-foot unit with 90 feet of frontage on Omotesando in Tokyo, slated to open May 31, and a 5,900-square-foot location at IFS in Chengdu, one of the richest and fastest-growing cities in China, targeted for April 6.

A 4,300-square-foot store in Crystals in Las Vegas is slated to open May 14 and another on Wooster Street in New York’s SoHo district is budgeted for late August.

Love these store invite cards always cool how they take real life in to a concept ...oh helmut we miss you....

Are those things you get with the new store openings via email invites to go to the store opening.. I got one from Celine a few days ago regarding the opening of the new Celine boutique on Ave Montaigne..

If it is, bugger, I don't go to Paris till June/July and have uni work to do beforehand..
