While eating dinner with my bf recently, I suddenly came up with the BRILLIANT idea that my bf and I need matching watches. I chose the SS and YG Cartier Ballon Bleu in Large and Medium and he chose the DateJust II with wg fluted bezel and black face (for him) and the DateJust Midsize with wg fluted bezel and diamond markers (for me).

My plan is to buy him the watch as his wedding present, and he will buy me the matching ladies watch as my wedding present. We have tried on both the Rolex and Cartier watches, and I know my bf likes the Rolex more while I like both the Rolex and the Cartier equally.

BUT, the more I am on this forum, the more I am loving the Love bracelet. . .and now I am conflicted. I think I can easily un-convince him that we don't need matching watches (LOL) and I can ask for a Love bracelet instead of a watch.

I have a nice elegant looking Longines watch with almost 2cts of diamonds that I have already, so it's not necessary for me to get another watch. BUT I do love the Ballon Bleu and I do plan to get it sooner or later! I also don't wear bracelets/bangles. However, it's never too late to start right?

What do you guys think? We are planning to save now!

Rolexes (what is the proper plural of that? Rolexs?). I think he deserves something too:-) He seems awfully generous...I'm sure you wouldn't have to wait too long into the future to get a love bracelet too, right??? :-) I think you will always treasure BOTH having a SUPER nice watch from your wedding.
And while I personally probably slightly prefer the looks of the Cartier, I picked Rolex because they are FAR more water resistant. You wouldn't have to take it off for some tasks in fear of it getting wet. Heck, you can even do shallow water swimming in a rolex, or accidentally wear it in a shower and not have to worry. The Cartier is splashproof at best.

I have both the ROLEX (same specfics, mid-size, black dial with diamond markers) and YG love bracelet. Its really different, and depends on what you need/want. I like the idea of matching watches as wedding gift to each other, and you CAN'T go wrong with Rolex!!You can always get the LOVE bracelet as an anniversary gift~:P

Thank you skphotoimages, he is really special  and definitely deserves something nice! I would, no matter what, get him his Rolex! And WOW, I did not know Cartier was that sensitive to water. I definitely didn't consider waterproofability when choosing between these watches, but it seems like Rolex is the winner. Everyone keeps telling me Rolex has a better resale value too. Is that correct?

bb10lue, I was admiring your pics in the Watch reference library! I kept staring at your watch picture that my bf ended up asking me if I preferred diamond markers vs. stick, and I was like "YES!" Haha. But now I'm considering whether or not I should be nice on his wallet and ask for the regular stick markers instead. . .It would end up looking more "matchy" if I did get that one instead!

Awww thanks sweetie!! Rolex uses REALLY GOOD diamonds which sparkle crazy!! Men don't care for diamonds on their watches BUT we do, also i think diamond markers add the extra femininity and just the right amount of bling to the watch;)!! I read somewhere here, someone also suggested engraving on the watch "For those who love, time is eternity" etc~thought it was very cute!!

The Cartier is 30m and the Rolex is 100m. You can't really safely submerse a 30m watch. People think it means you can, but other factors come into play such as pressure, force the watch enters the water, water temp, ect ect. You could wash your hands with a 30m watch on but I wouldn't do dishes or bathe a child, or go swimming in one. The Rolex your pretty safe doing all normal water activities with, except maybe water skiing (force and pressure) and deep water diving (scuba). Not that you would, but it gives some peace of mind.
Regarding resale, it seems to vary. Some Cartier watches are quartz, so their resale isn't as high. Also I think you are looking at a smaller market of buyer with a Cartier...everyone wants a Rolex. I also seem to notice the mens hold their value better than the womens, but I don't know why. These are just my observations though. I'm sure there is someone on here that is better qualified to answer that.

I'd want the diamond markers too..unless choosing the stick indices got me that much closer to owning a Love bracelet too..he he he.

I've got the 36mm datejust & yg love bracelet, I like the idea behind the meaning of the love bracelet & I think as a wedding present it would be such a lovely gift that you will treasure for years, maybe you could get the Rolex for your first wedding anniversary.

Matching watches for your wedding gifts to each other. LOVE for your 1st anniversary. No matter what you do, you can't go wrong. Congrats and let us know what you decide to do.

I think getting matching (or in the very least coordinating!) watches is a lovely idea as your wedding present. The Love bracelet would be a great gift for an Anniversary or even to commemorate the birth of your first child, as it's sentiment it so self-evident if that makes sense? But the watches are a great way to start your married life together IMO : )
