Cartier tank: yay or nay?

I have my mother's Cartier tank with an alligator band from the 70's. It's a wind up and it keeps time perfectly. Yes, full service is in the $400-500 range but that is done every 5 years or so. All high end watchmakers recommend this servicing, not just Cartier. And full service is more than a battery change, they take apart the entire watch and clean and lubricate all of the moving parts, as well as make any adjustments and polish. I love Cartier watches. I have a Santos Galbee automatic that makes me so happy, too. I say go for it, the tank is timeless!

I have had my Cartier Tank Solo (small) for 3 years and it has been running in tip top shape since then. It is a wonderful investment piece and I strongly recommend it!
The only regret I have is that I got it in the alligator strap which is starting to show just the tiniest wear because I wear it every day (gardening, working out etc.) Does anyone know if I can switch our my alligator strap and purchase a metal strap from Cartier to attach to my current watch? Is that even possible? And if so, how much would that be? Thanks and hope you pick the Cartier Tank!

I know that the solo is available with a steel strap. So I guess you can ask Cartier to change your alligator one. I have no idea of the price though...

I don't have the tank but my understanding is that most high end watches will cost several hundred for a full service.
The tank solo is going to be my boxy watch purchase :)

I dont have a tank either, but my longines is getting a full service at the moment and it will cost about 250-300. This is through a jeweller not longines. So $500ish for a cartier watch doesnt seem out of the question!

Books, i hope you get it and enjoy it, its my dream watch too :smile1:

I was in Cartier the other day looking at the tank with alligator. The SA explained you can purchase the steel strap, no problem. I believe it's about $400-500.

Yes, you can get a Tank Solo with an SS strap. I own one. I would highly reccomend getthing the SS strap over the leather one. It costs a lot more to upgrade to SS later and the SS will outlast the leather BY FAR!

Love my tank. I don't wear it all the time as I have a number of watches. But it's a great work/office watch. Very unobtrusive. Very comfortable to wear. No problems with it.

I've had my small Cartier Tank Francaise (alligator strap) for more than 12 years now. I don't wear it as often as I used to because I have other watches to rotate, but I never feel it is out of style. I am thinking about getting a different color strap for a change.
It's been serviced completely once or twice. I have it done at the Cartier main store in Manhattan.

Hi Tamarind,

Did you end up changing your alligator strap? I would like to change mine, and I was wondering about the cost. Thanks. :smile1:
