Thanks radio_shrink! Out of curiosity, what do the Swiss and Italian hallmarks look like?
The one I have, and the one my friend has, are both diamond-shaped like the one shown on this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Poinçon_or.JPG left ring - inside to the right.
Curiously the one on ebay is rectangular instead of the diamond-shaped hallmark. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartier-18K...17606?pt=Designer_Jewelry&hash=item336ce288e6 fourth picture from left. Do you know where that one could be made from?
Italian Hallmark:

It is a silver hallmark, but it is what the gold ones look like too. It is a star, followed by the makers number, and the province where they are located. It is used in conjunction with the standard of fineness (750).
According to the link you posted, it appears Cartier is making their items in Torino (Turin) as the abbreviation is TO. Compare Cartier's hallmark to the Bulgari hallmark here:

It is a star followed by the number 2337 and the province Alessandria abbreviated as AL.
Swiss hallmarks for jewelry is the standard of fineness (750 for gold) and the head of a st. bernard as seen below:

The other hallmarks pictured are legal requirements for watches only.
The French hallmark for gold is a eagle's head (sometimes in a diamond) as seen below:

The French, Swiss, and Italian hallmarks are all legal requirements, so if the piece does not have one of those stamps, it is not from one of those countries.
I too have a diamond hallmark, but I am unsure which country it is from. Mine is a diamond, and if I look at in on its side it appears to have an S at the top a larger C in a circle in the middle, and an A at the bottom. I am guessing this is a maker's mark for Cartier S.A...but a maker's mark does not tell me where it is from. I am also curious what the alpha symbol means. The USA is one of the few western countries that does not have an additional legal requirement to the standard of fineness (750) hallmark on jewelry so perhaps it is made in the USA?
