may i ask how much of a difference can there be? i want to manage my expectations. my SA says she has a good idea now of the color im looking for but warned me that most 20s are on the brown side, not bright, because it takes many more motifs to match. So since my heart is set on carnelian, at what point should i say, "ok this is as close as i can get"? also, may i see a photo of your 20 just to show her that blood red exists. :flowers:
...while brown seems to be the dominant “undertone” of the carnelian pieces I tried out, I noticed that there are differences...some are slightly brownish, some are burgundy and some look orange. I wanted a blood red that matched my rouge casaque Birkin which is itself a blood red with a dark undertone. Here’s the color I chose - whether I’m inside or outside, people note that they “like my red necklace and earrings” ~ exactly what I wanted to hear:

thanks! I feel like yours looks a little like mine. there is the bright red they show on the VCA website which i like a lot but that is kind of a trick of lighting, i hear. Anyway, let's see how much more bloody red i can get. My store may be accepting appointments in July.

They’re red with a brown undertone. But unmistakably red. The SA in Paris told me it’s the reddest they have so you’re likely right on the lighting. Even the ones that appear orange have a brown undertone, so if you want a pure red, you’re likely better to just get rubies.

i like the bit of brown, i do love carnelian, but hope i can find more reddish than orange. something to pop against my skin. also, nothing sexier than buying a red piece of jewelry in Paris!

hi everyone, does carnelian change color overtime? like does it get darker or lighter as time passes?
i know that malachite does change color after some time and wear, but i'm curious about the carnelian as i have the 5 motif bracelet. thanks.

my magic carnelian is a darker shade than my 5 motif carnelian bracelet....Carnelian brings the perfect pop of color
It seems like the more carnelian a piece requires the darker they go? Maybe that’s why my SA warned me the 20 necklace is usually on the browner side and why your Magic is darker than the 5 motif.

@Croissant, I have a blood red magic carnelian pendant...I held out for it. Interestingly, when held to the light, it looks a bit orangey...but when worn, is a true red. I love the red and looked at quite a few 20 motifs (probably 8-10) to see the difference. There are 20 motif necklaces that read red when worn but definitely have an orange (not brown) tinge when held up to the light.
Hold out for the color you love or you will not be happy. IT DOES EXIST!!!

does van cleef use some special indoor light in their boutique? inside the store, my carnelian looks bright red with a little tinge of orange which i prefer. but once i went outside the store and home, the stones appear to look much darker and almost brownish. that's why i asked earlier if carnelian changes color after some time and wear. btw, i bought mine few months ago and haven't use it much so it cannot be due to wear.

i have to say i actually love the color of yours dark or light. i think it is to be expected that it will look darker in certain lighting. the issue is orange (light)/brown(dark lighting) or blood red (light) /burgundy (dark lighting). i prefer the latter combo.

i'm so impatient i am now debating about whether to go for malachite instead, or yellow or pink hammered gold. although i love carnelian it seems like unless it is the perfect color it falls flat on me.

thanks for the reply.
I took a picture just now near the window. This is the latest shade of my carnelian. Can you please tell me what shade do you see? I think my eyes are sometime deceiving me.
