Black bags are great as they're so versatile and there are so many different shades of black. Depending on the leather and syle they can vary a lot. I almost consider my Anthracite Balenciaga Twiggy to be a black bag. I don't think you can have too many black bags so long as you choose correctly.

Wow, I am so envious. Well I was going to say I only have a few black bags but now that I think about it:

As far as black bags are concerned, I don't even have one at this point. I had a wonderfully soft and broken in Botkier Trigger, but my daughter "borrowed" it and I haven't seen it in quite a while. I find that when I wear black I want a little color in my bag, and when I wear color I like to compliment/contrast it with a colorful bag.
Let's see,
-there's my grab and go to the supermarket hobo
-my pretty, church bag
-the mommy bag with tons of pockets and sections to keep me organized and is NOT a baby bag...
-the I'm going out for a couple hours with DS bag
-my I'm wearing a suit and want to look polished bag
-my I'm going out with DH and feel pretty clutch
-the I just need a small satchel that helps me look put together but not too dressed up
Yep, I do have quite a few black bags and use them all. (and that's not counting all the colorful bags I use.

I had a recent "conversion" to black bags. I just couldn't bring myself to buy and keep them until a year ago. Now I'm mad about them, but I don't want to have more than I use. So at this point just three:

I have three:
- a Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Mini (a good everyday/work bag)
- a casual wristlet (Calvin Klein, I think? I don't remember, I've had it for ages) that I use when going out to bars
- a vintage Chanel flap (black lambskin/GHW)
To answer "how many is too many?" -- I would definitely buy a dressy wristlet in black, because I don't have that covered already. I also want an LV Epi Alma in black and a Balenciaga GGH City in black. However, I was looking at pictures of Chanel reissues, and as much as I like the matte black/GHW reissues, decided against getting one because it's too similar to the Chanel flap I already own. So for me it's not a specific number so much as a desire for all of my bags to fill different niches.
ETA: Whoops, I forgot one! I also have a Rebecca Minkoff Fling minaudiere in black with gold studs and gold chain.

I have 2 that I really use... Hermes black box medor clutch w phw in the larger size, and 40cm black box birkin w/ ghw. Those two pretty much cover all my need for black bags... One for going out, and the other is pretty much for any occasion except for black tie events... So I'm happy.
As for op's question... Personally, if I had over 20 black bags, chances are I am not using all of them equally... So I would say... 20?

i just had a conversation with a friend about this. and again, i said you can never have too many black bags, just like LBDs. some just don't work for certain occasions, and they all look so different.

I like my black bags because they go with everything and they don't have to be babied as much as lighter coloured bags. If I really like a black bag that I have I might buy it with different coloured hardwear, as I have done with my Skyes and the Prada clutches are also basically the same bag with different hardwear (and some strap options). I like to match my bags with the jewellery that I am wearing
