So, among the luxury woes that one can have, Hermès shopping is definitely not an easy one. Just when you think you've got some of the colours you are looking for sorted, then comes the... infinite choice of leathers. So many and so different.

I've been looking for a Bastia or Calvi in red for a long time. I've had a look at Rouge Piment, Rouge de Coeur but neither was the right red for me. From pics here Rouge Casaque and Rouge Vif look the prettiest to me, but were hard to find.

Then finally, last week, I saw Calvis in Rouge Casaque on a few Hermès EU websites. I ordered one pronto. The leather was Evercolour which I for some reason thought was similar to Epsom. When the Calvi arrived, the red colour was exquisite, but... I didn't like the leather  :crybaby:

Evercolour felt rubbery, "oily", too soft and there was already a huge crease on the inside where the Calvi folds when you close it. On the edge of the outside of the fold it looked like it had been pinched all along the edge, leaving a permanent "ridge". Compared to Chamkila or Epsom, I was not impressed.

I've e-mailed Hermès to ask if this was just a one off but I suspect it's the nature of this leather, Evercolour? No problem, because Hermès has a very generous return policy, but I'm disappointed nonetheless because I was expecting something more like Epsom. And now I'll have to wait for another Rouge Casaque/Vif to show up in the right leather (in Chamkila, please, Hermès!).

Some pics to illustrate. In any case, Rouge Casaque is a gorgeous red.IMG_0795.JPG

Hi - I have an evercolor abricot which I recently received and its v soft and buttery and if u c my pics u’ll notice there’s a crease in mine too. Doesn’t bother me - I prefer soft leathers. Hope u find what u r looking for.

Thank you both! I'm sure the right red Calvi will show up, it's just frustrating that it can take some time. I want it now! I should have researched Evercolour better before I ordered, but when I finally saw Rouge Casaque on the H websites, I just went in to frenzied buying mode

Also, sorry to everyone who love their Evercolour Calvis, didn't mean to be so negative but I was just expecting a different type of leather. I recently bought a Calvi in Chamkila chèvre and of the Bastia/Calvi leathers I've seen so far, it's my favourite. I was hoping for something similar. But a comparison between the two leathers is just not fair, they are so different to each other and as always with these things, it's just a matter of opinion and personal taste.

kat.fox:
I don't have a Box calf Calvi but they sure look beautiful in pics, just like bags in this leather. What I've learnt from reading here is Box calf can be a bit sensitive to scratching but I also seem to remember someone saying that superficial scratches often are "eased out" with the patina that comes as the item ages? I hope you'll post pics when yours arrives.

Gorgeous  Congratulations! I thought I only needed two more Calvis, a red and a shocking pink, but now I feel the need for a black one in Box too, even though I don't actually need one because I have enough black cardholders in other brands as it is. Thank you :annoyed:

(Btw, I spray all my bags and slg with Collonil Carbon Pro. So far, so good. I don't know what Hermès owners generally have to say about this spray, though.)

I love love love this spray for all our camping gear, rain-wear, and boots. I also spray my suede and fabric shoes with this... Weitzman, Chanel, Manolo, etc... it’s pretty amazing stuff. But I’ve been told not to treat my Hermes leathers with this, so I have not dared. Would be interested to hear from others.

It would be interesting to know why Hermès leathers shouldn't be treated with Collonil Carbon Pro. I recently sprayed my Chamkila Calvi with Carbon Pro *checking* and it looks just fine. So do my Chanel slg. I honestly don't dare to not protect them with something and Carbon Pro is the best I have found.

Purchased this from hermes.com. Stunning color. Bleu Zellige. Much prettier in person. I really thought I would be sending it back. It is a keeper. View attachment 4963027View attachment 4963028
krawford - This Calvi is absolutely gorgeous and I'm strongly considering purchasing one for myself. I wonder if I might impose to ask how you are feeling about it now that a few weeks have gone by since you received it? Is it wearing as you expected and/or do you have any concerns about how it will hold up in the long term? I know H exotics are fairly durable, but this would be a major splurge for me and I would hate for it not to be something that I could use regularly for a long, long time to come. Thanks!

It is gorgeous and I "swoon" over it every time I use it. That being said, I have to hold it carefully because I did pick it up one day with greasy fingers and now there is a "grease" mark on it. And I don't just throw it into my bag. I keep it in a side pocket. Would I buy it all over again, yes I would. I now know how to hold it. This is my 3rd exotic. If a red one comes around, I would definitely get it. I have several other calvis in epsom leather which are totally carefree. But you need to know that there is care involved in owning an exotic calvi.

Super helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. Now, back to trying to justify this purchase.

Does anyone have creative uses for calvis in more delicate leathers? I have a few in leathers that I’d rather not subject to the wear and tear of being used as a traditional cardholder, but I also want to be able to use and not just look at them!

I wouldn’t call it creative, but I use my Evercolor Calvi to hold credit and loyalty cards that I rarely use and store it in my desk drawer so while I don’t touch it much, I do see it almost everyday. My Epsom Calvi is the one I use in my bags.
