Buying CHANEL at the current prices/increases

My closet is really full these days. But never say never. I've been on the hunt for something Hermes so I haven't been paying much attention to Chanel.

Also, I don't usually go out of my way shopping at luxury boutiques like I used to (like 10 years ago). Sometimes if a bag is on my radar, I ask my "shopping" friends to shop for me as they have better spending records and success. So much in life has changed.

I understand the value of a dollar. I understand $10,000 is a lot for a lot of ppl to do essential things, so I don't spend so frivolously. I'm a landlord so when rent comes in every month, I understand these tenants really have to work so hard to put a roof over their heads and that knocks me off my high horse every so often.

This is a wonderful perspective. So many people seemingly cannot relate to others who are genuinely fighting to have their basic needs met, so it's refreshing to see someone who acknowledges that in their everyday life.

I have been window shopping chanel online occasionally for nearly 3 years. I check CHANEL official site and resale websites, looking for 2.55 and tweed bags mostly. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I'm so obsessed. Bought my first and only new chanel bag around 3 years ago, it was a tweed bag and I still enjoy it today - such an eye candy.

I wish I could spend $10K on a purse. Just saying this loud and typing this here, it sounds/looks ridiculous. Ten grand is not enough for house down payment, but enough for a lot of great things - an international travel, months of rent for a luxury apartment rental, courses/gears for learning new skills and it's around 2 months of the median household income in US.

Still love chanel tweeds, colorful, soft and they look fuzzy and cozy. Not sure how to process the fact that I'm not getting them anytime soon. Yeah, maybe I can buy pre-loved. But I want bags in new/excellent condition, not those worn dirty bags commonly seen on resale markets that still cost two to three grands. If you follow resale markets, you'll probably find bags in excellent condition cost no less than retail price.

Anyway, the feeling of not being able to afford something sucks but seems like it's the right thing to let it go. What's your thought, aspirational CHANEL enthusiasts like me?
Hi,
I agree with you ,prices are too expensive now.

I have few Chanel bags (WoC , Gabriel ,Pouch) I purchased pre-pandemic and always wanted the 2.55 but couldn’t find .
On my last trip I found it and decided to get my dream bag , I know the bag is overpriced but I wanted to get while I still can afford before I retire , and I really love handbags and totally not into jewelry .
It’s not an easy decision, I had to make my calculations, the euro price was slightly lower plus the tax refund I can get.
But I must say that sometimes I feel bad for spending all that money on a handbag. I purchased the classic flap years ago for about 35% -40% less.

Why does it have to be Chanel? When one door closes, another opens.

Other top-notch brands known for great shoulder bags include Gucci, YSL, Prada, and Bulgari.
Given the latest Dior scandal and past reporting about brands made in Italy and complaints historically about some of these brands and quality, wouldn’t put top notch and these in the same sentence. Frankly it’s hard to use top notch today when most companies care about revenue. This isn’t the luxury days of old.

I must say I'm quite impressed with Loewe, with their boutiques full of actual art pieces and sponsoring so many ways to keep craftsmenship alive, you get more of a feeling that the high prices are not just going into shareholder's pockets (I know it's part of LVMH)

you may want to spend some time in this thread. I don’t believe in craftsmanship for most brands anymore when it comes to luxury. It’s all a facade imo.

I heard about that.

Dior is LVMH so wouldn't they have a different way of doing things than conglomerates such as Prada and Kering?

It’s a lot. Over the top and totally unnecessary but I love Chanel so much and I know that it makes my fiancé feel good to walk up into the country club w me sporting a Chanel he bought me. He knows that in that environment, people notice and he cares a whole lot about that sort of thing. My friends, on the other hand, don’t spend that kind of money on these things and don’t care about this sort of stuff so I don’t wear it around them much. I feel silly, like they think I’ve lost my mind when people are struggling to pay groceries. I also worry about running into clients when I’m carrying an expensive handbag.

The country club scene is not reality and much of that is a keeping up with the joneses scene where people often spend beyond their means. We used to belong to a club but it was so artificial couldn’t stand it.

There’s an article in the WSJ today about the luxury companies needing to ensure the middle class is included as part of their corporate plans. According to the article 330 million of them send less than 2000 a year and make up half of luxury spend. I’m guessing with Chanel’s huge makeup line they can continue to target the middle class and continue to raise prices on bags and Rtw assuming the very wealthy will keep buying.

My SA mentioned to me that some (very rich) customers are happy about the price increases especially for the classic flap because "too many" people bought it. It is indeed very interesting that Chanel will open a brand new shop (3 floors) in about 1.5 years in Zurich. They currently have a small one (and only one floor). They see a potential and enough people are still buying.
I personally won't buy anymore classic flaps because it became ridiculous expensive.

The good thing about the crazy price increases is that I don’t even think about buying a Chanel anymore. That can be for other people.

And I’m with you, I don’t want to buy used luxury. I’ve done it and I just don’t enjoy those bags like the ones I bought new.

Regarding the “dumb” comments wrt wearing a $10k bag, I wouldn’t find it dumb but I do think at $10k a pop, the number of places that it’s appropriate to wear a Chanel flap decreases. At least for most people. If you’re in social circles where everyone has their own private jet, go for it.

I find this personally true. For my regular life with my regular job with my low key self with social circles that don’t care for luxury. I find wearing my bags limiting to… when I’m shopping or the random dinner. It’s exactly like when I look at those gorgeous dresses influencers are shilling and I’m like cool, I would love to wear that and look fabulous, but like. Where to? LOL.

I can totally relate to this. This is how I feel, too.
