Buying CHANEL at the current prices/increases

Sometimes what we think we want may not be what we actually want. Have you shopped in store? Tried the bag on a few times? Thought about how this bag would fit into your life and how often you would actually use it? How you would use it even 20 years from now? Is it really your style? Would you carry on the shoulder? Crossbody?

social media and ads have a way of influencing people into thinking they want something when it’s not practical suitable etc. I have a checklist I go through before I make a luxury purchase which also includes cost. And I think about alternatives. Of course there are some cases where you won’t find something comparable.

There have been cases where I thought something was highly desirable even though beyond what I wanted to spend and when I saw the item in person my desires switched off. There have been times I thought something was highly desirable and didn’t think through whether the style was really me and regretted the purchase sometimes later. This is why I sometimes literally spend years deciding before pulling the trigger. Of course this sometimes is detrimental due to increases but I’d rather be absolutely sure than regret.

To illustrate, at one point I was a tote bag lover and having collected bags for years it was only natural that I wanted a birkin. A bag that’s known as the ultimate luxury tote. I bought a few but following the pandemic my lifestyle changed and so did the world. Birkins are extremely recognizable now. I don’t like loud bags esp with crime in my area having increased. I carry little with me and I prefer crossbody for the security. The 25 sizes are also very impractical being half way up the arm type bag which you can’t carry this way in winter with thick coats. I’ve also been disappointed with the quality of some leathers. And if I could do it all over again I’d probably just have one 30 in a different color and that’s it. I don’t need more than one of those totes.

In life there will be many wants that are out of reach and that’s ok. It’s normal. Most people cannot afford a 10k bag and it’s not something to feel badly about. And most people also don’t want to spend that much either. I bought Chanel when they were less than fifty percent what they are today. I still love cfs but it is extremely unlikely I will buy another. I cannot justify that cost.

Chanel is beautiful and worth the admiration and love.
I was obsessed with chanel and still love it. Was fortunate to start my collection in 2011 and have every size except maxi but have not spent more than $4500 on chanel. Even back then we thought it was outrageously priced. Just like all the other OGs, I wouldn't spend $10k on chanel anymore. We understand the love for it though and understand how you feel about the price now.

I have purchased most of my chanel and othwr brands new in store but also some preloved. Honestly, maybe it comes with age (40yo) and having had used alot of my bags carefully but not carefully.....however, I don't mind preloved anymore tbh. As long as you go to the right websites and really read the descriptions, they usually come out nicer than what they rate it.

I just got a brand new from store celine triomphe and when I carried it for the first time, The metal clasp hit the wall and scratched it. I thought to myself, if this was preloved, that scratch wouldn't have hurt my heart so much. Lol.

Such a well articulated and inspirational post :)

Awe OP, love this post and just want to give you a big hug! I hope it makes us all reflect on our overconsumption and spending.

I do wonder how long these increases will continue on for.. will new Chanel bags surpass Hermes resale value?

Anyway, honestly, to answer your question.. I know it sounds silly, but it is just a bag. I totally agree with SDC's post. I got my "holy grail" purse recently, and I realized it is simply just a bag. These bags are definitely not necessities. If you truly love the bag so much you really want one day, I believe you will be blessed with one one way or another, even if it takes years.. but is it worth obsessing over, being sad over or stressed out about? Absolutely not. Just know it is coming if you genuinely wish for it. I am a big believer of manifestation. :)

SDC is 100% correct when she says you should not feel ashamed for not being able to afford a ridiculously priced handbag to begin with!

PS: I predict resale prices will fall soon, we are in a recession..

I have been window shopping chanel online occasionally for nearly 3 years. I check CHANEL official site and resale websites, looking for 2.55 and tweed bags mostly. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I'm so obsessed. Bought my first and only new chanel bag around 3 years ago, it was a tweed bag and I still enjoy it today - such an eye candy.

I wish I could spend $10K on a purse. Just saying this loud and typing this here, it sounds/looks ridiculous. Ten grand is not enough for house down payment, but enough for a lot of great things - an international travel, months of rent for a luxury apartment rental, courses/gears for learning new skills and it's around 2 months of the median household income in US.

Still love chanel tweeds, colorful, soft and they look fuzzy and cozy. Not sure how to process the fact that I'm not getting them anytime soon. Yeah, maybe I can buy pre-loved. But I want bags in new/excellent condition, not those worn dirty bags commonly seen on resale markets that still cost two to three grands. If you follow resale markets, you'll probably find bags in excellent condition cost no less than retail price.

Anyway, the feeling of not being able to afford something sucks but seems like it's the right thing to let it go. What's your thought, aspirational CHANEL enthusiasts like me?
I feel the same way. I was able to afford (well pay for) a classic flap about 10 years ago but did not buy one in the US because I wanted to get it in Paris at Rue Cambon. Although I traveled internationally over the years for various reasons I didn’t prioritize going to Paris because had already been there three times (stupid, stupid, stupid mistake)! Then pandemic happened and now prices have almost doubled. I cannot spend that much money on a bag without feeling foolish! It’s just too much money and at that price point I’d rather use the funds to travel and have experiences. It’s been a hard to move on from my ‘Chanel Paris Rue Cambon classic flap dream’ but I’ve think I’ve come to my senses and realize that ship has sailed and have found some peace sort of. I’m a crossbody girl so my WOC and mini rectangular are the best bag options for me anyway but my heart will still always want a classic flap. It’s a crummy place to be in and so totally share your frustration 100% but as they say c’est la vie.

I've never thought that a particular price for a particular item (i.e. 10k for a purse) was ridiculous, or someone was "dumb" to spend it, even when I wasn't interested in luxury shopping and thought a full priced coach was a luxury bag. When I realize there are things I ardently want but can't afford, it's motivation for me to figure out ways to increase my income.

I haven’t been here in awhile. My last purchase i think was few years back around the time the flaps were 5k. Seeing the new prices makes me sad and regret I didn’t get more 5 years ago haha. Right now, 10k a purse is something I can’t spend as I would prefer to use that for international trips with my family. Also hard to spend that $$$ knowing I used to get them for less than half of that few years ago. Still I love Chanel flaps and reissue. Wish I have 2 more 😊😊

I bought my first Chanel, a medium patent black classic flap with SHW in a boutique in 2014 when due to exchange rates the prices had dropped and I remember paying 4.9 million krw for it at the time (about $3600 USD today). I can’t imagine spending 3X the amount for a bag today. It was my first but I did notice the quilting starting to deflate about 5 years later so I sold it during Covid and bought a vintage (2006 I believe) black caviar with GHW in excellent condition. Recently I found a receipt for a filigree I bought in 2015 and I paid close to $4K for in store. Today I would absolutely not pay $10K for a Chanel flap but to each their own. If someone wants to spend the money on a new bag in store kudos to them. What that bag is worth to them is what matters most so as long as the price they pay is worth it to them. For myself, I’m looking for deals on the preloved market lately and have been finding some great ones. The demand for vintage/preloved items here are not as high as Japan, Europe or the U.S. so if I really look I can get some really good deals. The last 2 vintage pieces I bought I paid less than 2K each for them and I’m completely happy to get preloved pieces at a bargain. Sometimes I even come across items that people have never used, still have the stickers covering the hardware, in the original wrapping from the store and they sell it for less because maybe it was an impulsive buy and suddenly they need the cash. I think as long as you pay what your comfortable paying for it and won’t regret your purchase you can go either route: new or preloved.

I completely understand. I paid $8200+ tax in 2022 for my classic flap. I’m satisfied and I only want a mini (which is in the $5000 range) and then I am done.

I’ll admire other women with beautiful collections but I couldn’t justify spending $10,000+ on a bag. It makes no sense. I guess I might sound hypocritical since I paid about $9000 for my classic flap (that’s with tax included), but I don’t need another one and so far I am fine.

Good luck to those who want and love these bags.

Even though I only started two years ago I did acquire the small CF at 7.2 and mini flaps at 4.4 it is crazy to think about how much it’s gone up now, I barely use any of the five bags I acquired! It’s a shame since they’re quite costly. Perhaps it’s a sense of guilt that keeps them in my closet but for the first time in my collecting life I really don’t know where Chanel will stand in my collection five years from now. Even now I cannot see what direction Chanel will take.

For me it’s not about the initial cost or the price now vs then. I don’t feel comfortable wearing an extremely expensive handbag out and about. I don’t have a fancy lifestyle where I am taking cabs from place to place but use public transport, walk through normal streets, in areas that is not posh and live in a city where it’s common for phone snatching.

Unlike jewellery which can sometimes cost more than a Chanel handbag but because it’s smaller and and worn close to you, it feels a little safer to wear than a Chanel handbag. I don’t own any Hermès pieces but I would feel a little safer carrying that around than a Chanel handbag only because the classic flap is very recognizable and with the big increase they’ve made themselves even more public. Whilst the handbag may still be very desirable for me if I can’t use it I don’t want it.

If there is an amazing seasonal bag at the boutique that I fall in love with, perhaps. I did love a blue sequined bag where the sequins rippled like the ocean, but both DH and my SA were like, you don’t have the lifestyle and will never wear that lol

Or an incredible deal at resale on an exotic.

Otherwise, no. I’m sticking to a few pieces of versatile, not too logo intensive, RTW
