I am resurrecting this thread because I am now considering buying my first DBTY solitaire :)

First, thank youskphotoimages for starting this thread as it's really very helpful!

I've been really wanting a nice everyday necklace, and I know the solitaire will be so pretty and will go with everything. I am thinking of buying my necklace from BN so I can get the best bang for my buck. The question is, what would be a good size for a solitaire? What specs should I look for beyond the 4 c's so I can get the best stone, within my budget, that will sparkle the most? Can someone help me please? I'm not that great with diamonds...I only know the basics :)

Here are my thoughts:
Cut: Very good to Ideal
Color: G or H
Clarity: sI1 - VS1 (as long as its eye clean, I'm good!)
Carat: 0.26 - 0.32? I'm not sure! I am 5'4" with athletic build, if that helps!

How about depth, table, symmetry, fluorescence? Does anyone have a take on this?
The chain I'm looking at is either 18K WG or YG, thought I haven't decided yet. I'm pretty tan (olive skin tone) year round, however, I wear mostly white gold/silver pieces. Only reason why I'm considering YG is that I think it would just be a nice change and the chain will be thin enough that it won't be that noticeable. Thoughts?

My budget is about $500-700 for the stone. The chain will cost about $300. I don't want to spend over $1000 for the necklace :) I feel as though that this is enough for me to get that dainty and pretty necklace that I want, without going over the top!

TIA for all your help! It would be really great if someone can give me their input on what stone I should get!

PS: I plan on going to Tiffany's this weekend as well to try their necklaces and try to see the size in real life. Thanks a ton!

Diamond prices sure went up! I went on BlueNile to see if I could find a stone similiar to mine and the closest one was $800 ( I paid just under $600 for the stone I think) Sheesh!
Well if you do decide to go through blue nile either google a coupon code, wait for a sale, or message me and I'll give you a recent code from their emails. Usually you can save a little off the setting that way.
This diamond is pretty nice and in your range. I'd call to ask about the SI1 part though.

and in case the link doesn't work it's stock number is LD02155130 It's .30 H SI1 for $609. The cut is pretty good (well they call it ideal, but I'm way pickier than them..lol) It's table is 57% and the depth is 60.5% It has a kinda shallow crown angle though. Hmmm...
I spent 4 or 5 days solid...as in 30 hours or more just in picking my diamond..lol. I'm obsessive :-)
I almost like this one more:
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?pt=setform#diamonds_pid=LD02157193
Stock number LD02157193 T 57% D 60.5 The crown angle is a little better on this one but then the pavillion angle is a little steeper.
I've clicked on several stones and haven't seen one in the rangle I would look but I nit pick. Any of these stones will be truly stunning and better than most stones out there.
FYI, here is a stone like my friends Tiffany DBTY..well as close as I could get anyway. This blue nile one is actually better:
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?pt=setform#diamonds_pid=LD02155498
but it's an I with no fluorescence, so I know it isn't exactly what you want. It's be fine in YG, but in a WG bezel setting I think it's good to stck to G or H.
Well if you see any diamonds you like, post the link here and we'll give you our opinion on the stone :-)

When worn alone it stays perfectly put all day. When I wear the DBTY with certain other necklaces/chains it ends up on one side or the other. I think it's certain clasps that must pull it around. When I wear it with an Elsa Peretti necklace with a spring clasp it turns but when I wear it with a different heavier lobster clasped necklace it doesn't.

It is GORGEOUS!!!

OMG I tried to do that with my canon - it's SO hard! LOL! I've never tried the on the shoulder photo, I'll have to try that!

You look gorgeous in it! Okay I have a question as a Tiff's owner - does yours ride up? Mine is 18 inches and CONSTANTLY gets dragged up my neck by the clasp at the back. I'm always yanking it down and it's so annoying! And yes it POKES me too!

Thanks!!! nope..it stays down where it should. Part of that might be the diamond weight(wait..yours is actually bigger if I remember right, about .52?), but I think more so it's the basket behind the bezel.
I'm thinking of selling it though because when I wear it with my rose gold key it does end up off center. I think the other necklace's clasp pulls it. So I no longer wear it. I think I might try first seeing if I can figure out a way to make my key a fixed pendant and then maybe they'll both stay put. Hmmmmm.....

Interesting... I'm kind of getting really frustrated with mine! I bought it on ebay (I think .52 yes!) aprox... and I'm always yanking it down... I might sell it too to fund my other purchases!!! :) I just love the idea of it and it's so easy to wear... but is kind of getting on my nerves a bit too...

I am thinking of getting a dbty necklace as well.. I have a few questions.

The tiffany once has the poke factor? The only way i would be able to resolve the issue is if i go get it from somewhere else? I like the simplicity of the necklace. I used to lust over the aquamarine one since it's my birthstone, but i think id rather go for a diamond..

yeah it really does. Mine is .42 or 52 and does itch a bit.

Someone posted on another thread that they told their Tiffany's about the poking and tiffany's attached something to the back. Like a little disc I think.

Op one more for you and your readers, for the dbty necklace, 24/7 on or daytime only.

Bn and Tiffany have different necklace chain, are the yg tiff more delicate? You have a wg from bn, do you wear yours day and night? Has it changed color? Is your chain bigger than Tiffany. Tia!

Here is a way you all can compare chain sizes at Tiffany's. By BN chain and my silver Elsa Peretti chain are nearly the same size. The BN is more delicate because it is white gold and the links are a thinner gauge wire where as the silver tiffany's one is more beefed up. Ans just so you know, Tiffany's has Tiffany's silver chains AND Elsa Peretti ones. Thats important to know for the sizing thing.:
Tiffany's on left...slightly larger BN WG on right.

So if your at Tiffany's you can compare their DBTY chain to the silver Elsa peretty and you will sorta see the difference. It's substantial, but I still like the other benifits of the BN.

And yes, I wore it ALL the time. Sleeping and showers even. No color change.

I have been tossing up between a Tiffany or BN for some time now, and after trolling this forum I decided on the BN. I have ordered it in 18k yellow gold and this is the stone I chose. Have no idea if it is a good one or not?

Hey skphoto,

I am really impressed with the final product that you received. I was looking into building something very similar to this but I'm having a lot of difficulty balancing qualities to pick the right diamond. Would you be interested in lending me a hand? My account on here is new, so I can't pm you.

Thanks!
