Blue Topaz VS. Aquamarine

I found a gorgeous pale blue topaz ring, untreated, and its color is really good!!! Some of the irradiated ones can look a bit overdone, but are still very pretty nonetheless. I have seen them in the trade, that are such a soft baby blue, they could almost rival an aqua, but these are themselves quite rare and pricey.I recall an Art Deco dated one I saw years ago,I turned it down, silly fool, and have hunted for one ever since!!!
The color of that one was truly beautiful, and my boss who was a gemologist also, said its color was approaching that of a quite fine aqua (why did I turn it down!!???)
Anyway, its a really personal preference, and if you have a hunt about, you can find some really lovely topaz that are'nt treated,if you want the paler color and a big size.
But if your guy is willing to splash on an aqua,do the right thing, make it easy for him,go find one and do all the hard work for him as you know how guys just just hate shopping!!! And congratulations what a lovely sweet gesture to have to keep to remind you of your wedding day!!!xxxxxxxxx

Wow chaz...you are lucky to have laid your eyes on such a rare & beautiful find!
Are there any good reputable gemstone dealers online that anyone knows about? I am leary about buying it without seeing it in real life....but my little B&M jewelers around here don't have the size & selection I am looking for! kwim?

I was so lucky to work for a chap who,as much as it was his business,it was also his passion. All kinds of beautiful and rare things would come in,hahaha!! I remember my tutor in college showing me stones saying how rare they were and I would be very lucky to see them out in the trade if ever at all,a chrysoberyl cats eye sticks out here, the day I started in my new job with this chap,in comes a lady with an absolutely huge one for valuation!!

My bosses eyes were shining when he told me what it was,and I realised I was lucky to have a job with him,he really loves what he does and I knew I would learn heaps off him.

As for finding something like that, mmmm, the one I saw was set in an Art Deco white gold setting,so it was antique, you could try ringing around a few places and ask if they deal with loose stones, most don't but keep going, someone will be able to point you in the right direction. You can always approach auction houses or places that do jewellery valuations, they all ask each other for advice from time to time so tend to know about this sort of thing and the best places to look.

Failing that, its a trip to a big jewellers, make a day of it,and do other shopping etc too,and get them to get something in for you,it may be more pricey doing it that way,but it takes away any uncertainty on such a sentimental purchase, you don't want to be worrying about being ripped off when you are planning for one of the loveliest days of your life!!!

Aquamarine is my birthstone, but my experience with it was not so pleasant. I would go with the topaz (the first you showed is my favorite) because aquamarine is too soft and might chip or crack. Whatever you chose, just enjoy it and treasure it!

Funny you should post. I wore both on the same ring!

The center stone is a 3.33 Blue Topaz, the side stones are aquamarine. My mother got it for me the day of my wedding as a big blue punch, and it sparkled in soooo many of my wedding pics! I got compliments left and right.

It was a few bucks, but nothing like what you'd think. PM me if you'd like the link. Spend the money on your honeymoon, and still get a great ring!
