Blue Agate Fading?

I have not decided yet. Since it is not part of a set I might leave it like this for a while and see if it is going to discolour completely. Pity in a way. I always wanted to have a full set but I could never match a 10, 20, earrings, ring or watch to the original colour so I kept looking. Now it is too late. I never knew the colour is artificially enhanced. Good that you are so knowledgeable here🌺
Maybe it's better not to have gotten a full set and then they all discolored

Today I managed to take a photo in bright sunlight as requested.
So here is a comparison btw the photos from 2019 taken in the boutique and nowadays All photos are taken with the same phone then and now. (The colour is misrepresented on a iPhone so it will look much brighter if you view on this device. If you have Samsung then you can see it more true to the actual colour.)

I would take this to the boutique and speak with the sales manager. You really have nothing to lose, and this is a quality issue. You only wore it a few times. Hopefully they would consider replacing the stones for free.

Or you could sell it, and use the money towards other pieces. There were questions on the quality of the BA when it was first released - durability, where the stones came from. Just like new things/inventions, we won’t know the quality until time passes. I would ask the SA, then speak to the SM. Sometimes they will replace items free of charge. Fingers crossed 🤞I did hear of charges being set up front, then upon pick up..the fee is waived.

There was a tiktoker who was upset that her guilloche tarnished. Luckily she did have a following, and got her refund. If you are a loyal customer and considered a frequent buyer, you may have better luck. I mean in her case, I didn’t think the tarnish was caused by quality issues, but clearly there is an issue with your BA bracelet.

The only issue with getting the replacement (similar to the tiktoker’s decision making process; she was luckily given a choice between a replacement or refund), is you may see the issue again because, in this case, this is a dye process issue. It is a conundrum. I would request a refund or credit over a replacement if they offered it, but like many here complained, we don’t have a following like an influencer.

VCA does have quality control issues which were already mentioned earlier. I haven’t heard of fees waived for stone quality though. Usually there are for pave diamonds falling out in rare cases.

I hope VCA will address this for you. The tarnish comments hasn’t stopped, 😳 but it didn’t stop VCA from doing PIs.

I bought mine from Prince Building boutique in HK. It was exclusive only to this boutique there at the beginning. Anyone bought from there and experienced the same issues?
It will be interesting to know.

Has anyone else had issues with their BA VA fading or losing color? Or any VA stone losing color?

I’ve owned my BA bracelet since 2020. I know it used to be a deeper shade of blue, but has since gotten dull. It shocked me in 2023, when I added the 10 Motif necklace - which was much more vibrant.
At the time, I asked my SA if the BA should fade or change colors? She noted the stones will vary in color (which I knew), but it should not change in color.

Fast forward to this month, when I received my BA earrings. Now I realize my BA 10 Motif has slightly changed in color as well.

I wore my bracelet pretty much 24.7, on and off, for a couple years. It was exposed to water and soap, but no pools or anything.

I’ve only worn my 10 Motif a handful of times, and it hasn’t even been a full two years since I’ve owned it.

Planning on having the stones on my bracelet replaced later this year (for a fee, of course). At that point I plan on taking photos of its color, and will see if it again changes over time.

I love VCA and will continue buying VCA. This really has me puzzled, and made me a little sad. I love the pop of blue, which is why the stone is in my collection.

Thank you to @lynne_ross for noting that your BA has turned more grey.

- First and second photos are of my bracelet in 2020.
- Third photo is of my 10 Motif in August 2023.
- Fourth photo is now (April 2025).

You can see the change in color in both the bracelet and necklace; the necklace now looks like a mix between the new earrings and old, faded bracelet.

Wow, my bracelet looks like your necklace now but looking at the change of your bracelet, I'm not hopeful I have seen the end of it.

Thank you Alena. Can you take some holding it up to the light with the light coming through from behind? Meaning you would not be wearing it.
Like this one.

Ahhh. Thank you @Alena21 ! The blue has gotten darker. It still remains translucent. Hope your SA can help you find a solution that works for you. For what it’s worth I don’t think it is significantly darker. It still retains that hue of blue. But I guess I am less bothered by the change because I prefer a more “royal” shade of blue. And you have to be the one happy with it. Good luck.

Nope, the blue is not darker, as the colour fades ,the saturation/vividness of the colour has gone down , so the gray tones take over which makes the colour appear duller/darker. But in reality this is discolouration.
The natural stone is perfectly fine that's why it is still translucent. The only thing is that something had gone wrong with the artificial dye process, so the dye had faded even with best of care and this shouldn't have happened. This is definitely quality issue.
I did read a few years back about BA stones flaking and peeling. Not sure if they addressed it. This with the discolouration should also be addressed but I don't know if they are going to do so. I'm thinking even if the stones get changed, would this can happen again .... there are a lot of questions to be asked here.

It looks almost grey in your last picture. I'm sorry

Couldn't get ChatGPT to link me to the direct sources as the links are outdated, but sounds like blue dye in general, but specifically in agate tend to be more unstable, which can explain the color degradation much faster than let's say, red dye/carnelian. Still wonder what makes some batches more stable than others though...here's the screencap.
