These threads get so old, and gets circulated in each forum. "Why do you people buy LV, it's so ugly?" "Why do you people buy tokidoki, it's so childish." "Why do you buy Coach, it's not even a real designer." ad nauseum.

Everyone has their own personal taste, and it makes no sense to bash someone for liking one thing or the other. If you don't like Tiffany's, don't buy it, but don't bash the people that do.

Exactly!!

I'm not a big jewelry person so when I get a piece I tend to wear it to death. For example, when I was in 10th grade, my dad got me the heart tag bracelet and I seriously wore it for 3 years (then also got the round tag and wearing it on my other wrist) before switching to the lock bracelet.
I bought my heart toggle necklace for graduation coming up on 4 years ago and still wear that quite a bit since it goes with everything.
I do sometimes switch off necklaces (I'm a huge Tarina Tarantino fan). For the most part though, it's one of my Tiffany silver necklaces, diamond studs (not Tiffany's) in both holes in my ears and for rings, my "permanents" are a diamond star ring by Galerie de Bijoux and a sapphire (pink, yellow, red and orange) heart ring by Carlo Viani.

The jewellery I like can't be purchased here and is manufactured by craftspeople from South Asian countries. Think Alexandra Kotur. Jewellery like this (this is from the Gem Palace, Jaipur, India)

No one was bashing anything. Like I said, it's all fine and good, one of my most treasured pieces is the 3 disc pendant, it was a gift from my son for Valentine's day and my DH had each of our initials engraved in each of the circles. So it's unique and sentimental. I had actually liked a tiffany setting for an engagement ring but I wanted a 2 carat unincluded emerald cut emerald for it and that is something that we couldn't come close to affording so we flew to Canada, bought a guaranteed non-conflict diamond, Royal Asscher cut and stuck it in a Harry Winston Classic setting. Diamonds are something else that I find completely blah blah blah but anyway, here's a piece I like:

I firmly believe in supporting independent craftspeople over huge corporations like Tiffany. Tiffany has made their billions and will continue to do so. I found some fabulous pieces of artisan jewelry at our local nature museum once that I always get wonderful compliments on. We even have tPF members like Japster and Casto Creations that both make reasonably priced, beautiful and different jewelry from the status quo. Supporting folks like them by purchasing unique pieces of jewelry is far more appealing to me than possessing something from the "little blue box store". But to each his own.:shrugs:

YAY! :) Go independent designers!!! hee hee

Did I mention that I am working on a three strand pearl necklace for my boss! I showed him the photo of your necklace and he wants one for his wife...times three! :yahoo:

And when you purchase jewelry from small designers like me or Japster or others on this forum it really does make a difference!!! It's not like I'm marking up my prices to pay for all the middle men and the "name" ... I would love for "Casto" to be a famous jewelry brand someday. hee hee hee :roflmfao:

I guess I saw it as less a bash of Tiffany's than as a Pro-Indy Designer thread. :) Maybe that's just my own Indy bias. lol

I do like several Tiffany's pieces but several of them I can make for myself so I wouldn't actually purchase them. Although I wouldn't say no to a Tiffany's wedding band!!!

OOOMMMMGGG!! You have GOT to send me a picture when it's finished! I can not imagine how beautiful a three strander like mine would be! :tender:

Hmm, let's see, he's already covered Christmas, Valentines and our anniversary so that means there's still Mother's Day and my birthday in July.

I love jewelry from Gem Palace.

You can actually buy some of this at Barneys....

Oh don't worry, I will! :) He also wants a platinum clasp!!!

:wtf:   WOW, I'm speechless. I REALLY can't wait to see it now!

I hear that platinum is buggar all to work with. Because it's so hard, you have to have the right type of tools or the platinum with pulverize them! You probably know more about that than I do, but that's why so many jewelers around here won't resize platinum rings.

I love indy designers as well but I have to say I love Tiffanys the most. I love the classics...be it my Tiffany silver knot earrings or my LV Speedy. When I just bought a ring for myself to replace my wedding band (getting divorced) I chose a beautiful silver ring with roses on it from Tiffanys. It was a huge boost to buy myself something in a little blue box. :yahoo:

Before I rant, I am in no way a snob, that is NOT what this is about!
I work for a custom silver jewelry artist/designer. I have been working for a friend of his since November in a store in the snottiest mall (of course where I purchase my LV and Movado-lol). They sell amazing jewelry from some of the most talented designers I have ever seen. Lately they have been buying items from designers that replicate (and NO they are not replicas as in fakes but ARE the exact same thing to a T-legally-and most of the time nicer) what the Tiffany Store sells. We sell the heck out of the stuff (cause ours is half or less of the Tiffany price) I own some Tiffany pieces that I can no longer even stand to look at because I am so bored to death by it and also because I have now seen so many pieces that are interesting, intricate and unusual. They are buying what I now consider crap, the hearts, the beads, the toggles, the same thing I see on young girls, old ladies and everyone in between. In the mean time, they are not buying from the real artists, I am not seeing the wonderful, hand crafted, all consuming details and most of all, the beauty. Am I missing something? Where is the beauty? Would everyone rather have a boring status symbol that everyone else just looks at, knows what it is and how much is cost than have someone actually look at the jewelry and possibly even compliment on it? I don't know, maybe having someone say, Oh wow, that is so cool is much more appealing to me than having them just look and not say anything because it's no big deal. Ok, so check out the real artists, and please, if you like an artist, mention it!!! We need more artists being talked about and sold!!!
My suggestions:
Bon Ami (incredible and unusual pieces she makes in Isreal)
Erika Zap (pearls that are so much fun)

What designs are they copying? Designs that don't have patent/copywright protection? Hmmm.

Anyways, I do like the work of some independant designers but I would say that often their prices are more than Tiffany's - definitely not less in my experience. Some indie designers charge alot more than Tiffany in terms of what you get IMO.
