Big bucks for canvas?? Really?

I love coated canvas. I have an LV Speedy and two LAMB Walderstons all of which look brand new after several years. Any leather bag I ever had looked like garbage after a few months, plus they are so heavy they give me shoulder/back pain. It's true you don't have to pay LV prices, my LAMBs were $300 retail but I got them on sale for half price.

So, how many brands do covered canvas of this type? The ones I know of are:

LV
Goyard
Michael Kors
Rioni

The bottom two are cheaper than the others.

So does Fendi with both their some of their purses and wallet. Fendi which is also owned by the same company that owns LV. They are both owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy.

Here's a link to one of Fendi's wallet

I used to think like that as well, but lately, I have spotted more and more really cute canvas bags, so I am starting to rethink the issue. I mean, it was very easy to not go for any canvas bags when they were all kind of ugly, but that seems to be changing... So maybe I should give at least one a try?

Depends on the bag. Canvas is indestructible versus leather from china. I'd rather pay $1000 for a canvas bag from LV or goyard than $500 for a made in china bag from Rebecca minkoff, treesje, etc. I had a few - the quality is poor.

Hm, that got me curious and I asked my cousin's fiance who works in leather manifacturing and also has some experience with high end labels like Longchamp.
He said that leather from China isn't necessarily bad, afterall it is still the same animal and process, but that China is often chosen because the production is much cheaper, the tools and machines used etc.
I showed him a few of my leather bags and he found Fossil and Rebecca Minkoff to be of gold quality. Though I don't own any high end designer brands, but low end leather bags from Halle Berry's collection.

It likely isn't premium leather, but I don't think it is crappy either ;)

Someone enlighten me if this is wrong.

As far as paying 1000 for a LV - it isn't normal canvas, they use sailcloth, which is a very heavy fabric made to last. The idea is actually quite original, as well as the look. I think you also pay for a unique, iconic design and the name of the brand. You pay an artist for his unique design so to say. At least that is how I interpret it. :)

I never understood why canvas can be sooo expensive until a friend showed me hers (goyard st. louis tote). She didn't have to worry about the bag being exposed to heat or rain compared to her leather bags and did I mention how light they are? However, I still prefer the feel and look of leather (but that's just me).

I've been thinking about this and thought I'd bump it, because I bought another coated canvas bag yesterday from Dior (below) and I'm in love with it and had to promote canvas! :p (For reference, this tote is the small size, and it is the "older" Panarea tote style, which is still in stock in many boutiques. Raf Simons, who I do admire very much, redesigned the Panarea, now available on the Dior website, so the canvas now is slightly different -- the new style is now flat rosato canvas without the puffy quilts or sheen as shown below, and it also has different, resin-coated monochromatic Dior charms rather than silver metallic charms. I prefer the older Panarea because I love puffy quilts, but that's my opinion).

I agree that spending over $1000 for coated canvas seems insane, and it really is, when you think about it. I've always been a leather girl -- all kinds of leather. But this canvas REALLY holds up well, and stands up to all kinds of weather, as many have stated about canvas before. (I could be wrong but I don't think anyone has mentioned the Dior canvas on this thread yet.) Rain, snow, whatever -- it's resistant to almost anything and you can wash any stains from it gently with a soft cloth and some gentle soap and water. It doesn't scratch easily at all. It holds its shape nicely. It is, in short, a gorgeous, luxurious tote. I wouldn't plunk it down on a radiator or let it sit out in the sun for hours on end, as it's susceptible like anything else to elements like this, but this material LASTS.

It's also a way to buy a piece of a brand that you really adore without blowing multiple G's on bags from the same designer (which, if you have the money, are also worth the craftmanship, by the way!). It gives you that lovely feeling of luxury and treating yourself to something high quality. It is an awesome bag. I don't know how else to say it. ;)

Past a certain price point, it doesn't matter if it's leather or canvas. The mark up is very high. You're paying for the design. So, LV really shouldn't be singled out for this.

This. While it makes sense to be discriminating about material and price when it's the $50-200 range, it's just as crazy to buy a leather bag for $1000 as it is to buy a canvas one since leather bags can be had for much less too. I've seen decent bags for $150 so to me a designer mark up is huge no matter what material you're talking about.

Love this post, and your beautiful Dior! The post is a perfect segue to the questions I was going to ask the coated canvas fans--

What, aside from LV and Goyard, have you found to hold up really well over the years? and

What are some high-quality coated canvas options that are not covered with monograms?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm going to look into this Dior bag!

Hi there! Glad you enjoyed my post and thank you for the compliment on my Dior! :) Make sure to check it out quickly and ask for the smaller tote (my size) of the "older" Panarea tote - I recommend doing it soon because once the boutiques sell out of the older styles, they'll only have the "new" ones in stock, without the lovely puffy quilting/etc. I highly recommend talking to Monica, a wonderful SA at the Copley Place boutique in Boston, MA. She's fantastic! I've also known Tori for years and she's absolutely lovely - both women are so helpful! Good luck and let me know what happens!

I agree! And what about the nylon Longchamp bags? I know they have leather on the straps and the snap, but the prices for those are crazy. I have two that were given to me as a gift...classic black and a classic brown. They are good travel/weekender bags. But because I know they were pricey, I can't use them as "schlep" bags...or feel good putting them on a plane etc. That's the problem with expensive bags that don't seem to make sense due to their directed use or materials:smile1:

I think Fossil has some coated canvas bags in the same range as MK I believe? Maybe a little less expensive.

I like coated canvas. It's light weight.
Do you suggest Fossil bags? They have some fun, classic designs...but I am a tad shy to buy the brand yet as it isn't well known where I live half of the year (London) and they are sometimes pricey for not being "designer."
