Big bucks for canvas?? Really?

LV is known for having about 10 times markup of their wares, so no, I don't think that's enough of an explanation.
Granted, I think all items tend to increase their prices at a greater amount proportionally as their cost goes up, there's more than just materials to think about in context of price of just the bag. Other overhead items include design, labor (will be the similar in cost for LV leather vs. canvas), rent/property cost for manufacturing sites and retail stores, ad campaigns, salary of salespeople (Glassdoor has them starting at almost double what Coach salespeople earn), and materials and manufacturing of their shopping bags, boxes, and dust covers.

In terms of buying a bag, this experience can mean little or everything to a buyer, but plays a factor in determining the cost of a bag.

Past a certain price point, it doesn't matter if it's leather or canvas. The mark up is very high. You're paying for the design. So, LV really shouldn't be singled out for this.

I'm thinking LV and Goyard here in particular, but I'm sure there are others. $1000+ for canvas? Really? Why? What makes it worth paying that much? What makes it better than the $50 canvas bag at your favorite department store?

Because really, if I'm going to pay that much for something, I want leather. Niiiiice leather. Soft, yummy leather.

Not canvas.

::walks away shaking her head and muttering about not getting it::

Because I like them and they make my little heart sing! Isn't that reason enough? I won't buy a bag that I don't enjoy carrying no matter whether it's canvas, cotton, leather, etc.

I think it's the same for other high end brands....If only we knew.....would we even consider buying their bags? I am seriously asking myself the question.....

Yet another reason to shop the preloved market. Go green!

Yep, absolutely - if I love a design, I pay for it.

I'd go into greater detail about my reasoning buuuuuut...I don't have to justify a damn thing about how I spend my money ;)

I have to admit, you are changing my feelings about canvas! I love leather bags, but I must admit, I'm becoming intrigued by a coated canvas option - especially canvas's low maintenance and wearability in all types of weather. Are (coated) canvas bags also easily repairable? That's one reason I've preferred leather over synthetic materials in the past.

LV and GOYARD's coated canvas are the top of the line coated canvas in the market. I have a LV Montsouris backpack in monogram coated canvas it was made around late 1990's its the leather or the vachetta patina into beautiful honey brown color. Though the bottom of has some water marking I still love it because it gives the bag a character and the coated canvas looks as new :)

For me buying designer handbag is not matter of practicality & price but with WANT AND USE. Because if I am going to base my decision of getting let's say $1000 coated canvas designer handbag on PRACTICALITY and PRICE i will ending up settling on getting an grocery plastic bag. I won't love it but it will hold my stuff like a $1000 handbags but a lot cheaper.

For me it depends on the quality of the canvas and the complexity of the design and stitching. If its a basic shopper tote shape with not even embossing in a single solid color then I'd feel $1000+ is a little crazy. My edgy little LV canvas purse was just shy of $1000 10 years ago but her canvas is double-thick and tough enough to crack a skull, wipe off any blood stains, and walk away fresh as a daisy (kidding of course).:bagslap:

Goyard was pricey because the bag was once hand-painted. They're no longer so, so dramatic price increases are beyond me. No one has brought up Moynat - I assume they have a coated canvas as well?
