I'm thinking LV and Goyard here in particular, but I'm sure there are others. $1000+ for canvas? Really? Why? What makes it worth paying that much? What makes it better than the $50 canvas bag at your favorite department store?

Because really, if I'm going to pay that much for something, I want leather. Niiiiice leather. Soft, yummy leather.

Not canvas.

::walks away shaking her head and muttering about not getting it::

I understand what you're saying.
Ironic that LV and Goyard look like new decade after decade and hold their value.
Soft shmooshy leather may delicious but often shows wear. I need to really baby lambskin but my a few of my LVs are workhorses, able to weather the elements.

The making of a high end bag is expensive. Whether it is canvas or leather, the craftmanship is the same. Hence the high price.
I have never owned a Goyard and I don't like the brand, but I have had a Vuitton coated canvas Speedy for years and years and it is still in perfect condition, compared to some of my leather bags.
Canvas coated bags are generally indestructible, can be worn in all weathers, need no maintenance ard are lightweight.

Depends on the bag. Canvas is indestructible versus leather from china. I'd rather pay $1000 for a canvas bag from LV or goyard than $500 for a made in china bag from Rebecca minkoff, treesje, etc. I had a few - the quality is poor.

Yes, Really! I actually find that my Canvas bag 's have held up better than some of my more expensive leather handbags! It looks as new as the day I purchased them, Love Canvas! :)

I have a grosgrain and satin bag (not canvas, but a non-leather) that I often receive compliments on, and it's one of the oldest bags I own. I even brought it into the Valentino boutique in NYC last year and the SAs said they remember that bag from 2009 and they were so happy it still looked like new.
I have learned over the years that while leather may be the more "expensive" material, it doesn't necessarily last.

It's just a matter of preference. I can get a $50 leather bag, or a $500 leather bag, or a $5000 leather bag. They all serve the same function.

As for coated canvas, I really love Louis Vuitton. I like the styling, the interiors, the attention to detail, the craftsmanship and the way it holds up under most conditions. All of my Louis Vuitton coated canvas bags look brand new, and I've been using them for years. I won't put them directly on a floor, but otherwise I don't have to baby them to keep them from getting scuffed, stained, or otherwise damaged.

I have a Goyard St. Louis GM and love it to pieces. It's been folded, crumpled, smooshed and weighed down heavily in every possible situation but still looks great, many years later. It's this flexibility of the material that I prefer the St. Louis to the NF. I don't own one but I gather the NFs are more stiff and not as easily packable. I also like that Goyard is not as recognisable. Easy to clean and never wrinkles, no matter how long it's been sitting in my suitcase. It has been a surprisingly good purchase.

As for price - at one point I believe all Goyards were hand-painted. I don't think this is the case anymore for the St.L ... One would hope they would change the price!

Exactly! I love leather bags, but they get heavy once I put my things in them and then I no longer enjoy carrying them. Canvas is practical all around. And I agree, it's all about the craftsmanship.

I couldn't agree more. I have a hard time carrying my leather bags, they are just too heavy once my stuff is in. After an hour I could just toss it, it gets so burdensome. There's only one leather bag I have been wearing lately on weekends, my MbyMJ Percy. It's tiny, therefore it doesn't hurt. But i can't do anything bigger, especially to work. To work, I've been carrying Longchamp or Tumi. I am considering a canvas LV next.

I like that I can find great pre-loved canvas (lv) bags for what I would pay for a coach, or other brand leather bags. I know that my canvas bag will last, as can been seen in the 30+ year old canvas bags being sold in amazing condition. I also know that my canvas bag holds its value; in a year my bag will be worth more than when I bought it and in 3 months my coach leather bag will be at the outlet for 50% off or more.
