SO Black 19 is already being faked :

(Yes I'm still spiraling down the Reddit rabbit hole)

They have some things faked before the real ones even hit the stores.

Wait until you get to the people who go into Cartier and copy down the serial numbers when they try stuff on so that their items can have an actual valid serial number. There are whole categories of things I’d never buy secondhand anymore after seeing the copies.

The first post I opened led me to these photos. Note the metal plate :wtf:

ETA: I can't believe they also have the 19 w/ silver HW already. So scary how accurate the newer bags look to my untrained eye.

TBH I think the metal plate is easier to replicate than the hologram stickers. The stickers just had more details that could be wrong.

Not only does this make me second guess buying second hand luxury, but buying luxury at all. Even if the leather is better quality, this just goes to show that the lies we tell ourselves about craftsmanship don't make our bags worth the four figures they cost.

I don't need another bag, by any means, but if I ever do, it will probably be something custom or commissioned by an artisan.

They're lies for sure, luxury is all about buying the name. Sure the quality and details are better but there's no way its worth the $$ we drop on it lol. I just accept that I'm paying a huge markup for the brand.

I can appreciate a lesser/no name brand with high quality leather and craftsmanship. I can't understand how the "same" leather of these rep bags can be purchased for under $500. (Obviously I know nothing about the cost of leather lol.) What I can't get behind is rep bags passing fake for real, along with likely funding nefarious organizations and questionable labor sources.

To give an idea of pricing, I was a bit interested in leatherworking awhile ago and you can buy lambskin for about $80 for 7sqft (keep in mind that factories probably purchase it at wholesale prices instead). But I don't think under $500 is actually that surprising. I was at Coach the other day and they had the new Hayden crossbody and the lambskin was super soft - felt very comparable to Chanel's for $295. The thing with reps though, is that you don't know if they actually use full hides to make the bags or if it's some sort of reconstituted leather.

The more I think about it, I don't even care if someone tries to pass off their fake bag as authentic. What bothers me is the idea that people could be willfully selling fakes as authentic on the pre-loved market.

xx link to counterfeits not allowed

I just bought a JUC ring two months ago and I feel sick to my stomach right now at the idea of it.

I’ve also been stuck in that subreddit rabbit hole and someone was complaining about their ‘less than perfect’ bag that they bought from a factory that made both Chanel replicas and authentics. And someone else said it was probably a Chanel factory second.

CHANEL. FACTORY. SECOND.

between that and the $4k replica ostrich Hermes and the $1.5k replica Love bracelets, I’m in shock!

I went on the reddit subforum to have a snoop on the fake bags. Boy was that an eye opener. People clearly have no issues on the ethics of making these purchases. In fact there is derision for those forking out to buy real. A significant proportion will also end up being sold in the preloved market as authentic chanel. Such a shame.

... and clothes on the preloved market!

Now I think that, like, 95% of my Isabel Marant clothes from The Real Real are unfortunately fake (especially a Chloé skirt I just got from Poshmark)... for some of them, the material just doesn't compare to the authentic pieces I've bought from Net-A-Porter or wherever. It sucks for folks, like me, who didn't have disposable income to buy the garments (or bags) and are now playing catch up for "dream" pieces... I don't even want to think about authenticating the Chanel 06A jacket I bought in 2020 from HEWI... :hrmm:

Harper's Bazaar should bring back this campaign.
