Be careful at Zales.com

You're right. I guess what I meant was... nowhere does it say that "special order" items are different from any other items - other than shipping time (and it actually arrived next day anyway, lol).

And an update - still not getting anywhere with CS. They're saying no return, neither store nor on-line. Apparently they outsource the distribution - this bracelet came from somewhere else (the return address is another company, not Zales.com) and the distribution house will not take the return. Zales is acting like they have no responsibility here (like the other company is the problem). How would a consumer know this? Why would Zales sell something they have no control over?

That's ridiculous. Maybe if you call again just ask right away to speak to a supervisor and let them know that since they keep jerking you around you intend to file a charge back with your credit card (as someone else suggested) for the full amount of the bracelet.. surely at that point someone will try to work things out with you.

I think it is terrible customer service, I think you should return the item from where you got it from, the exact method (recorded delivery etc). I also think it is a shame that you got the big ticket item and your mother didnt like it. I would have made my mother try it on etc before treating her to it.
Dont me bullied into this and give your credit card company a heads up on what is going on to prepare for a chargeback.

Every card company is different. I bank w/ a bank that values CS above all else so filing a dispute is very painless. Call your card, explain what happened and ask for their help. Sometimes they do "mediation" for lack of a better term w/ the merchant. I am sorry this happened to you but considering my past experience w/ Zales, I cannot say I am surprised.

Thanks... I'm just sick over this!
I've never disputed anything but my CC is pretty good with other stuff. I'll call them now...

You poor thing, I hope you get it worked out. I had a similar headache with a chain jeweller here in Australia with a return recently. Basically, they were going to ridiculous lengths to stuff me around until the return period lapsed and they could "legitimately" refuse my refund. I ended up doing some research online and called the (unlisted) national head office. I explained my situation politely and lo-and-behold five minutes after I hung up the store manager who'd been steadfastly avoiding me phoned and asked when I'd like to come in to pick up the full refund.

Go as high as you can, although I hope you get somewhere with the CC company. The whole business with different distribution centres should not be the customer's problem. If they say they take returns, that should be that.

I would probably try returning it to a different Zales store if you have another nearby, since that seems like one of the easier options. If that doesn't work, call the online return number back and demand to talk with a supervisor if you don't get anywhere with the associates. Kindly let them know their return policy posted online doesn't say special orders or anything else is non-returnable, they have no exclusions posted and they need to have it stated if they do have exclusions. Let them know you will dispute the charges if they don't issue you a refund. I think they will give you the money back.

Did you by chance pay with Amex? My Amex has return protection, within 90 days of purchase if a merchant will not take the item back, you send the item to Amex and they issue you a refund. I have used this once, I had a problem with a small store that would not take back a shirt I bought. I originally called Amex to dispute the charge and they said I had return protection. I mailed the shirt in and they refunded me, with no hassle. I am not sure if it is all Amex cards or not.
Amex is great in this area, they also offer refunds for lost or damaged items within 90 days of purchase.
Good luck, I would go down fighting.

I have known a few with similar experiences and you should be able to do a chargeback. There was one case, with a friend of mine in a similar situation, that tried to do a chargeback but was unsuccessful because he had signed some paperwork which stated the policy. I guess it just depends on your credit card too.

I know American Express has a very good policy with things like this...... have no idea what kind of card you used but it certainly can't hurt to call your cc company to see if you have any protection.
