Balenciaga city bag dilemma

I was in the Balenciaga store a few weeks ago, and the SA informed me that the City will be discontinued, and replaced with the Neo Classic (see picture below). Apparently, the new creative director, Demna Gvasalia, wanted to take the Fashion House into a different direction since the original City design isn't hers. Here's an article explaining: https://www.purseblog.com/balenciaga/introducing-the-balenciaga-neo-classic-bag/

Well, that kind of sucks IMHO. I have nothing against the Neo classic other than the fact it may look a bit weird once the leather softens, with the wider base, but maybe not. As for Demna taking the line in a different direction, he's been doing that since he took the helm and I can understand him wanting to do that. Daniel Lee is doing the same with Bottega Veneta, they're selling off Tomas Maier's designs at bargain rates right now. But I still want to cry when I see iconic bags disappear.

Maybe the City bags will have a better resale value once people realize this is the end of them.

I'm not sure, but personally I prefer the Classic City over the Neo Classic. It's just great leathery smooshy goodness to me. And I also know there are a lot of loyal fans out there too - Pugs & Purses (https://www.pursesandpugs.com/) comes to mind. Who knows, if the Neo Classic isn't as big of a hit - they will probably bring the Classic City back.
Not sure that would happen. For the current creative director to resurrect a design from the last one might be perceived as poor optics.

I didn’t see where it said they were totally discontinuing the Old City bag!
Perhaps this is just something to tickle people’s fancy! Hard to believe they would get rid of a sure money maker! Oh well!:hrmm:

IF this bag were to be discontinued---it would be the newest thing to create a mad rush to purchase from the resale market. I have heard MANY influencers say lately that they believe the motorcycle bag is getting ready to be the next "it" bag (again).

I had a meeting today with a crazy sexy, creative female and she was carrying her Black City that she has had since 2005. Totally gorgeous!! (her style and the bag) It was beautifully broken in and screamed "I am confident & chic AND I make the rules!"

She was the one dictating to everyone in her path what killer style looks like -- she was super current + amazingly chic. If anyone ever thought a City bag was outdated then they just need to take a look at that gypset goddess or someone of similar ilk. Chic & independent women in cities all over the globe continue to carry their Bals because they are gorgeous and they don't care if some magazine editor or internet idiot tells then it's outdated.

The City is effortless and stylish no matter what year it is. In my opinion it is a true classic. That being said, if you love the bag keep it and who cares what anyone else says. Rock it like you mean it and they will all be wishing that they had gotten one too.

You are spot on! Bal moto bags signified free spirit and originality. They were not logo defined and only people in the know recognized the unique signature of Bal moto bags. They were the members of a special insiders club. What is produced now has no individuality, no spirit, just blahhhhh....

OMG! This is EXACTLY what my BFF said to me yesterday after she saw that Neo monstrosity online!

Hey Much,

I know what you mean but I think it's much worse optics to steal the main design of a classic bag like the City, change around some freakin' angles and promote it as a new design, i e the Neo :amuse:

Despite his fine eyes :P, I'll never forgive Demna for what's been done to the City under his watch. They've destroyed the City legacy- and my hopes of ever acquiring new City:s in certain colours and without that cursed elongated shoulder strap.

They should have left the City alone! :crybaby:

Hey my friend, I'm not in disagreement with you. Daniel Lee is busy doing much the same with Tomas Maier's designs over at BV. But there are many who love the longer strap and the way the City has been "modernized". I feel like such a dinosaur...your rouge vif will show up, there was a link to a nice one (expensive) just posted the other day, did you see it?
