I love your collection. :) I'm so sad I miss out on the city that year. I was offered one as a very good deal, but didn't care for it during that time. I fell in love with it years later.

Hey, thanks Vink. You've had some great bags too but I don't know what you have now. Have you posted your collection lately in the Bal subforum?
That stings to pass on a great bag. I passed on something once too and still think about it.

These are the bags that I think will transcend time (in no particular order):

Lady Dior
Diorissimo
Chanel Classic Flap
Chanel Reissue
Hermes Birkin
Hermes Kelly
LV Speedy
Balenciaga City

Most of these bags have already passed the test of time. They are still highly coveted even years after their original launch, and look as chic as ever.
I think these are the most well-known and recognizable bags, but I don't think they are necessarily the ones that will best stand the test of time from a fashion standpoint. Personally, I don't think that the Bal City or the LV Neverfull look very classic. They are high-quality bags and very popular for different reasons -- the City is young and fun and the Neverfull is big, practical, and indestructible -- but classic? Not to me. I also think the Gucci Jackie looks dated now, but all of this is simply my humble opinion.

I personally think I'll still be carrying my Celine Blades and Edge many years from now, because they are understated, beautiful and functional. They're not the most popular, but that's not the test for me. I can carry them now, and I can still see myself carrying them when I'm 75. I also bet they are going to last that long. They are highest-quality bags I've owned (I've owned Fendi, YSL, and Balenciaga).

I wonder what bags would best stand the test of time from a quality standpoint? I imagine it is Hermes and Chanel, but I've not yet had the pleasure of owning either.

My collection's still the same. :) I just can't let any of them go. Still, I'm not really in love with the colors in the recent years. I'm still kicking myself over Bois De Rose. How did I dare passing her up! That's the last color that I love and didn't get. A lesson is learned. It's been some time now. I should update the photo. :)

...are the bags that you will carry and love regardless of what others think.

The truest of truth. I have MJ Stella that I bought in 2003 when the style was all the rage. People will say that it's not really "in" right now, I don't care. I still carry her from time to time and love her so much. Never a chance I'll let her go.

From the quality standpoint, sorry to burst your bubble, it's not Chanel. And I own more than quite a few of them. :) I love them, too, but Chanel's quality isn't the best. :) I can vouch for Dior, Marc Jacobs, and any all-leather bag Coach made before 1995.

At the end, if judged by the taste of the owner, anything that you've loved and carried for a long time is a classic. "Will" isn't really a good prediction. I still remember my first days of buying designer bags and that was 2002. Many people had claimed that MJ Sophia and Stella are classics. Now, I still carry my Stella dearly, but I don't know about those people. :)
