I think if there is a chance the person can still do something about it (ie; get their money back through ebay or paypal) then yes. If not, I would only feel comortable telling them if they directly asked for an opinion.

Bag lover, you are amazing. Please check.
The bag has a very good quality, however it has a small label on the inside pocket reading SP06 197, however the tag says C362111 (which means fall)...
Also, please confirm that the zipper lampo now should have the lightening bolt under the word LAMPO....

Good point. If they didn't ask for it, don't volunteer to provide information. Good intention on our part (giving that person the heads-up) can be perceived otherwise. We wouldn't know if that person can do something about it or not. There are always friendly/knowledagle SAs/managers who could help them if they really wanted to find out for themselves.

Yup I definitely would for a couple of reasons: a) so i don't walk into the designer's store carrying a genuine fake! - HOW embarassing would that be!! b) so I don't buy from the store/person again!

I think some ppl might rather live in bliss and not know but i would.... =P

I'm only familiar with available colors/styles on more recent (or certain) items only; I'm a research nuts, I store all the colors/styles on my computer. For older styles, I have to check with another MJ expert (who contributes to Vogue1966's MJ Info Page).

As far as authenticating, I'm still learning & picking up details as I go along. In the past, all my items were purchased from major retailers (Neimans, Nordies, Bloomies, Saks, etc), I didn't have to inspect details such as zipper heads. I only started buying several discontinued/rare items from trusthworthy sellers (established reputation) on ebay recently; I also bought some bags from 3 other friends. I'm surrounded by many shopping centers so I would stick to them & certain friends. If the items are still available in stores, I wouldn't buy from ebay no matter how cheap they are. No deal is worth it for me; if I can't afford it, I don't buy it. If I do shop on ebay, I confirm with my 'experts' before I proceed just to be safe, it doesn't hurt having additional pairs of eyes. =)

I am pretty sure that only the style number on the original MJ tag (not the serial number on the inside pocket) gives the year/season of MJ items (2004 and after). For bags released in 2003 or before, I have some ideas on how to decode them, but I'm haven't seen enough to be confident that I'm right (so I can't share them yet).

C - Collections (Marc Jacobs), M for Marc by Marc Jacobs
3 - Bags
Y - Year in 200x
S - Season (1 - Spring, 2 - Fall, 3 - Resort)
x - the last 3 numbers are style numbers
x - they are the same for different colors
x - that are grouped together

Based on descriptions in the listings, the stuffs being sold are not from the seller's own collection (ie. selling them for others). Even if the seller is legit (like some other consignment shops), there's always a possiblity that fakes got in. I wouldn't be surprised if there are fakes. Stars sometimes are photographed with fake bags (check forums such as Balenciaga, LV, Hermes) too; it doesn't make any sense b/c they have $$, maybe, their personal shoppers didn't know those are replicas.

This happens with many reputable sellers (especially those selling items for others), we can't assume that everything is authentic. If the item looks off or the stories don't add up, I would pass; I wouldn't make up excuses for sellers (what if this, what if that). What would happen if Balenciaga experts didn't spot the replicas on Costco's website several months ago? Costco is very big here.

Laura, it's not real, I hope you can get your money back.

There are 2 batches of Fall 06 Stams; early Fall Stams have item number C362020, late Fall Stams have item number C362111. I will be in MJ store this weekend, I will confirm the following info pertaining to the colors:
C362020: Black, Bronze, Camel, Ivory
C362111: Black, Cashew, Mouse, Chestnut,
I noticed the differences on Black Stams. The 1st batch of Black Stams have dark stitching and shiny (little bit of sheen) leather, the second batch has matte leather and grey stitching.
