Is this bag authentic? It's stamped style #9954, but it sure doesn't look like a Prairie Bag with that wonky handle on top. It looks like someone glued a piece of an old shoulder strap onto the top of the bag. :confused1:

Seller: skskinner1960
Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/162343410490?ul_noapp=true
I wonder if someone added that handle on top as an "improvement." The rest looks okay to me.

Can you see what they did? It looks like someone cut about a foot off the end of the long strap and sewed it onto the top of the bag. There are holes for the strap buckle in that "top handle", and the buckle for the long strap is almost at the center of the strap. I'll bet there's a darned good reason why there aren't any clear photos of any part of that strap or of the handle, that thing's been royally butchered. It's even remotely possible that none of that long strap is original to the bag and it was taken off something else, but more likely it was a hatchet job on the original strap..The second photo even shows the cut end right by the buckle.

Seller lists the strap drop as 17.5 inches but the total length of the 9954 strap according to Coach's 1994 catalog should be 54 inches, so that would be about a 26" drop. That strap has been chop-shopped. Compare it to this listing of how the strap is supposed to look:

"Gently pre-owned" my arse.

Thank you! I think sellers should disclose drastic modifications like that. It's a SNAD waiting to happen.

Exactly! Not only that, but the creed is stamped much too low on the pocket. The J plant code in "Made in the United States" creeds wasn't used for handbags, but in 2001 which is the date code in that serial number was being used by a Chinese plant for bags and had been since at least the middle of 2000. So both the plant and month codes in that bag are fake. Also, the stitching is too large, the hangtag is probably fake but definitely doesn't belong with a bag from 2001, and maybe it's just an effect of the lousy photos and lighting but the inside looks like the leather color is much too light for that shade of brown.

The seller's photos are just so incredibly bad that I wouldn't touch any of them. That apparent Duffle Sac in the pale green with the unreadable serial number is making me nervous too.

And the black bag with a K7S-4156 serial definitely IS fake, the S plant code was already being used by China as early as 1995 for travel and business bags ONLY. And that style number belongs ONLY to a Soho Belted Pouch - this one is missing the "belt" and does NOT have the correct long strap.
Please report this one too:

DO NOT BUY ANY NAME-BRAND BAGS FROM " DMOON77781 " !!!

There's a weird stamp at the top of the pocket above the creed too. I have NO idea what it's supposed to be. The serial number is a mess but I don't think it's 00..., the first digit is too round for a zero. But the font of the creed itself is off too with those very round letters and then "states" squished almost flat.

ETA - not only does the hangtag look wrong, but the hardware colors are strange too, the buckle in this pic is really dark.

Thanks everyone for all your expertise! I did message the seller asking for more picture of the duffle sac, but haven't heard anything back. In other case, I was not planning to get anything from this seller. Will post here if the seller sends me more pictures. Cheers!

Ugh! What a nightmare, particularly when it's an international transaction.

While I've made comments about Swaggers, how "good" the fakes are and warning buyers to be very careful who they buy from, in this case, I believe your bag is authentic.

The details look good and in looking at the seller's history, I'm guessing her suspension is a result of slow shipping, use of stock photos and not having the items in stock when listing them. It looks like she was selling items then going shopping to fill the order, a dangerous risk since items might be sold out by the time she needs it.

While she may have mixed fakes or had other questionable items or habits, I believe you did fine in your case.

Other opinions are welcome.

ETA: I found a cache of the listing from which you purchased and had you come here prior to buying, you would have been advised not to buy from that listing. There are just 2 pictures, both stolen from Coach and a description that was also plagiarized from Coach.

Thank you so much for your response. I knew I shouldn't have bought it from the listing because, you're right, there is so much wrong with that listing, it's not even funny. It may, just may, have been an impulse purchase after more wine than I care to admit....much more. I gotta stop drinking and bidding.

Incidentally, my friend, knowing I wanted that bag (and obviously not realising that I'd gone and purchased one myself), sent me the same bag for Christmas! It finally arrived today. It is exactly the same...no differences at all. I've analysed it from every angle, compared hardware, everything. So, yep, I think you're right - against all odds, it's a genuine bag.

Now I have two! I'll be re-selling one on eBay tomorrow!

I agree it looks authentic. The Macy's sticker and receipt look exactly like what I have gotten from Macy's.

I've had listings or sellers get removed after my purchase, which is always disconcerting, but the items I received were fine in some cases.

Thanks - having never bought anything from Macy's I wasn't sure!

  • If the bag in question is not on an auction site, please use the following:

Item Name (if you know it):
    Link (if available):
Then attach any photos (all authentication must include photos.)
    • Please be sure to include a clear readable photo of the creed stamp and serial number from inside the bag or accessory if there is one, and the bag's measurements when the bag is an older or vintage leather Coach.
    • Since mid-2014, Coach stopped putting serial numbers on creeds so in newer bags where the creeds don't have serial numbers, we also need to see pictures of the labels/tags from inside the bag. They are either both in the main open part sewn into the seam of the lining, or one might be buried deep inside the zipper pocket. One shows where made and the other has a serial number.

Would the FB seller, Lizel Bagshop happen to be located in the Philippines?

Without even knowing the seller, location or source of items (if she actually has those items in her possession), I'm not at all comfortable. Pictures appear to be from a variety of sources, some possibly found on the internet in image searches and other pictures appear to have been taken in Coach outlet stores.

Are the pictures you've posted you own pictures of the bag you received or are they pictures that the seller sent you?

You didn't answer the question above. That's important because if you search the Coach subforum (and possibly other designers), you'll see many posts about supposedly authentic items that are (close) fakes coming from the Philippines.
according to her the origin of the item is from the U.S that her relatives have bought during thanksgiving day
If her relatives bought those bags in the US during Thanksgiving, why are so many of her pictures taken at the various manufacturers' outlet stores?

And if her relatives bought the bags and if she has them in her possession, it's very important for her to show pictures of the various details that allow authenticators to assess the bag's provenance. Lizel Bagshop's facebook pictures don't do that and had you asked about the seller prior to buying, I wouldn't have recommended the seller.

That said, the pictures of the bag you posted appear to show an authentic bag.
