Now I did some research about authenticating coach bags and I read that zippers are supposed to have a YKK mark on it? This bag just came with this hook thing.

Sorry for the huge pictures, and thank you again!!! I bought this as a Christmas present for my mom who's been wanting a Coach purse for a while so I really hope it's authentic...
-Edit-
I forgot to add that there is a small stitched tag inside that says Made in Philippines

This is just for my own peace of mind I was wondering something. I came across a red dinky bag today, but I have pretty strong suspicions that it was fake. (The stitching was very inconsistent--on the flap the space between stitches went from really narrow to really wide.) For future reference I was wondering with their older red bags if the thread and leather match perfectly. Today was the first time I came across a red bag, and this one not only had the bad stitching but the thread was lighter than the leather itself. (Like the thread was a bright fire engine red, and the leather was more of a deep red.) Thanks :)

"Now I did some research about authenticating coach bags and I read that zippers are supposed to have a YKK mark on it?"

Absolutely NOT !!! That's one of the biggest lies on the internet. Read my Signature, then read the six Salearea Coach guides ESPECIALLY the two on YKK Zippers and so-called "authenticity Guides". Then take any and all of those bogus guides that say that something like a zipper can prove a purse is genuine and throw them in the digital garbage pile.

http://search.reviews.ebay.com/members/salearea

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

And the bag is genuine. Welcome to tPF.

And don't be scared, I usually don't bite - unless someone mentions YKK zippers. :graucho:

If your pictures are your pictures of the bag you received, it's authentic.

Disregard whatever authenticity guides you read that require authentic Coaches to have YKK (or a certain brand of) zippers. 99% of the guides on the internet are either incomplete, obsolete or just plain wrong.

Instead, read this guide regarding the zipper myth:
http://www.ebay.com/gds/Coach-and-the-YKK-Zipper-Myth-the-Basic-Facts-/10000000040073710/g.html

The Salearea guides are one of very few trustworthy guides. They're updated and if necessary, corrected on a regular basis. And the author has done the research necessary to write guides. Many others are copy-and-paste versions of someone else's inaccurate guides.

Stitching details don't prove anything, the stitching could have been redone or repaired at some time. We'd need to see the rest of the bag, especially if it had a stamped creed, and we'd need to carefully examine the stitches.

As for the red colors, Whateve might be able to answer that. But colors can fade, can change depending on what's used to condition the leather, and can even be re-dyed. Was all the stitching all over the bag exactly the same color? And was the rest of the stitching even or uneven? There are too many things that could have been done to that bag to give a simple answer.

Thank you so much Hyacinth and BeenBurned for your quick and detailed answers! I should have just came here first instead of wasting 2 hours looking at fake guides...

I can't wait to give this authentic Coach to my mom :)

I've seen some variation in the lengths of stitches on NYC bags. I've seen it where the stitches get smaller around the corners. I don't know if this was intentional or if the machine had trouble advancing over the thicker leather at the corners. I've also seen a few places where the stitches were wider like it skipped ahead more than it should have. This can happen if the person guiding the machine pushes too hard.

As far as the color is concerned, on my NYC red bag, the thread matches pretty good, but is slightly lighter than the leather. In the places where the leather has darkened, the thread looks much too bright. On a later red bag, the thread seems darker than the leather.

Thanks Hyacinth and Whateve :smile1: Just trying to gather information for the next time I come across a red bag.
It was a NYC bag--it was a XXX-XXXX format serial. The creed read normally (no misspellings or grammatical errors) but was pretty dark where it was stamped so everything really stood out. (This was also strange to me since usually I only find the darker colored bags--black, brown, navy, etc.) Both parts of the turnlock looked correct--4 prongs on the flap piece and 2 prongs on the turnlock itself and no grooves.
If I come across it again when I go out again on Thursday I'll be sure to have a fully charged phone so I can upload pictures here for a second opinion!
