Thank you for your help. I think next time i will post to this page before I buy. To the untrained eye that bag was a coach. I had the black one in 1 hand and the yellow in the other. I always go for black or browns and I decided to brighten things up a bit. I looked at the creeds of both and the both seemed ok. If that store was open right now, I'd go over to count grommets (among other things) on the black one!! The only thing I remember about that one is it was made in Mexico.

It's not an unbreakable rule, but bags with creeds from Mexico usually weren't faked. Almost every clasic and vintage leather fake will have a Made in the US creed, or a Made in Korea one. I've seen a tiny handful of probably fakes with Italy or Turkey creeds, but usually the fakes makers figured a US creed was a lot more believeable.

I saw your pics earlier....that is awesome!! I'll be seeing you on the rehab thread. I look forward to seeing the after pics!!
Thanks, Soozlz, I'll appreciate all the advice the pros can give me! And most definitely this will NOT be my first project. Or second. Or third :-)

P.S. I'm sorry about the fake. I wish you luck in getting your money back!

Faking a bag made in US is surely more believable. A lot of the tell tale signs of this fake aren't really things a beginner would think of. The subtle things about the creed and the number of holes on the strap speak volumes to a seasoned collector. I know there was never a factory on korea....if it said made in korea and I didn't catch it I'd be very mad at me.

That's a great plan B!! I happen to have 2 brass clips : )
You do and they have anchors!

I just popped into a thrift shop at lunch time and bought two old leather bags and a braided leather belt that I plan to turn into tassles this weekend. I found a saddlery shop that has lots of cool clips and I have a voucher for a craft shop so I can buy a cutting mat and knife. It might keep me away from ebay for a while!

Hi, everyone! No one bid so I did and I won! Please tell me if this is genuine. I have got to stop being naughty. Does anyone know the style name? It looks like a pig skin suede lining. I love the pared down look of this purse, so elegant so I hope it's real. TIA

Desc. Fabulous Vintage Coach Shoulder Bag
Item no. 221374154808
Seller: 2012driver59

Genuine, from the 1997 Manhattan Collection, but we've never found the style names.

Those are great clips!! I can't wait to see the tassels when you are done. Good luck staying away from eBay!! That's a tough one lol!! I worked on my zip top shopper rehab and when on wayback looking for stock photos. I still snuck a peek on eBay.

You'd be surprised at how many people apparently don't even read the creeds, or wonder why some of them sound like they were written by a third-rate translation program. Check out the one below, we've seen dozens of these by sellers who were totally clueless about what was wrong with their "Coaches".

I've been working for 7 or 8 years on convincing everyone about how important the creed and serial number actually are, maybe I'm finally making some headway. :D

Just to clarify - Coach never had a HANDBAG factory in Korea. They did make some accessories like scarves and hats (but NOT wallets!) there.

Oh that's bad!! I have to say, I'm kind of bummed that coach doesn't have more info from their own archives accessible to collectors.

Geez Louise!! That is pretty funny. I am always amazed at what some sellers overlook when listing an item. I've contacted sellers and asked "are you sure it's made in USA" because the picture of the creed says Italy or Costa Rica or whatever the place they haven't noticed. All the while going on and on about how they've examined the purse "closely" and have seen no wear, etc. Or how they go on about this being "one of the purses made in the good old U S of A before everything got sent to China" when it was clearly made somewhere else. I know why cops consider eyewitness information unreliable.

My own daughter who bought her first Coach bag in 2009 told me that she doesn't like Coach anymore because they aren't made in the US like her bag. I had to show her the creed to convince her she was wrong.

I've gotten so used to reading creeds that I feel like other brands are missing something. I like knowing where and when my purse was made, and of what materials.
