Hi, and welcome to tPF!

Unfortunately there's just not enough evidence to say either way if it's real or not. My main focus is always on the creed stamp and the serial number and its plant production codes, and that one has a plant code (J) that we still haven't been able to verify as making bags in the USA in that year (1998). It's a big problem when we find several different formats for that serial number prefix "D8J-" and none of them can be positively proved real or fake. A genuine bag with that prefix and creed would have been made in April 1998 in the "J" plant located in the US.

Below are examples, the one you're asking about is at the bottom for comparison. I'm inclined to think the green one at least may not be genuine because of one other detail on the bag it was in, but with the others the few photos we have of the rest of the bag don't help much. And when I compare both the serial number stamp and the creed stamp, yours isn't like any of the others, which makes it even harder to pin down. Your serial number looks most like the light greyish-blue one, but the Coach logo in the creed stamp isn't the same. Creed stamps weren't changed often, unlike serial number stamps, so as long as it wasn't a time when new formats were being introduced and the description of the materials used in the bags were the same, a creed stamp should match others from that same plant and time period.

All I can do is say that yours is questionable, sorry. Maybe a poster here who's familiar with that 9170 style can suggest what area of the bag to take photos of that might help authenticating it. It may have been a remake, probably catalog-only, of the original Classic Shoulder Bag / Classic Pouch so some of the details of the original may have been updated or tweaked when it was remade in 1998. Coach re-introduced at least 5 or 6 other vintage styles in early 1998 so that's one thing in your bag's favor.

I believe it is fake. The font of the numbers look off and I think I see a frame dent around the edges of the numbers. You would never see this on an authentic bag. I think the cartouche around the Coach name at the top of the creed has problems too. I don't have any creeds in my files that are that narrow. There should be more space above and below the word "Coach." I have a few classic pouches but mine are really old, not remakes. None of mine have the edging along the top of the inside under the flap. This doesn't prove anything as they could have changed details for the remake. The strap on mine is tapered, getting thinner as it nears the buckles. Did you have a chance to see if there was anything stamped on the buckles? If it was stamped "solid brass", that would prove further it was fake.
