The bag feels off and the last pic is rings on the handles. I lived this style bag but I don't even want to carry it if its fake. Before I bought it I studied pics and the creed # matches the bag. Even when she handed it to me I thought it might be ok but I have doubts.
The keychain on it looks fake too.

The font of the number looks a little off. Is there anything stamped on the buckles? What does the pocket under the flap look like? The stitching looks sloppy.

Sometimes Coach used plant codes for more than one plant, but there are a few codes that we've never seen reused. The P plant code was only used for Costa Rica. In all of the thousands of bags we've looked at here, we've never seen an authentic bag with that code that wasn't made in Costa Rica.

Here is a creed from a bag made in the same month and year, yet it says Costa Rica. How can the same plant be in two locations at once?
Thanks to both hyacinth and whateve for your valuable info.

Ok now I think this is a good one...

I'm praying this one is okay. The creed says made in the United States. I have always wanted one of these! Bought at goodwill for $6. I almost passed it by!! It's structurally sound just needs some conditioner. The leather is still yummy and soft.
My heart is gonna race until its authenticated. I just saw it was made in the us when I was taking a pic.

It looks fine. Congratulations!

Hello,

Can you please authenticate this Coach Backpack for me?

I found the bag at a local thrift store and I took the photos myself.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/37540457@N04/sets/72157635476005726/

The dimensions are:

10x5.25x11

The last measurement is width when it is lying flat so may not be very accurate.

Thank you!

I'm sorry, but it's fake. It's a copy of a Legacy West Backpack. But it has a 1996 year code, and the Legacy West line wasn't even introduced until around late 2001. That style would also have had a patterned lining with the Coach logo if it had been genuine.

I'm seeing a few problems with the creed including a wrong style number and serial number stamping details that don't match other bags from the same plant and year. And there's NO way Coach would have used a zipper with black fabric backing inside that color bag. If it's supposed to be the industrial-style zipper, the pull isn't right.

Still looking, but I can't recommend that one. If I find any evidence to change my mind, I'll add to this reply.

EDITED TO ADD - I still don't think it's genuine. Along with what I already mentioned, the shapes of most of the digits in the serial number aren't right for that plant and year. Here's one from 2 months earlier, and the ones I've found from later in the year show the same details:
yikes, so much to learn! many, many thanks Hyacinth for all the added infos! i will definitely remember all of those. vintage coach bags are so hard to authenticate as compared to other brands. thanks again experts. be blessed always.
