The PIT bag is obviously wrong. This one still throws me a little though having it in my hands and comparing it to my others. It just feels right if that makes sense.

Some of the classic leather fakes are scary, they're so good, especially the feel if the leather. It's probably easier to copy a leather bag than it is one of the newer post-China bags where the fakers have to worry about copying and matching patterns and linings. So many countries (Korea, Turkey, Spain, Mexico, etc) have had a large pool of craftsman skilled in leatherworking that all it takes is a bag to copy from and some basic information on Coach serial numbers. Even when Coach was manufacturing exclusively in NYC, many skilled members of its workforce were originally from all over Latin America.

The hardware was probably easy to find too. You really can't judge authenticity of older leather Coaches by "feel". That's why actually seeing the creed and serial number is so important, it's the one thing many offshore fakes makers didn't really understand how to fake accurately.

I wouldn't rely too much on the listed measurements of the first one. It is dependent on how the seller measured it.

This bag was made before 1994, so the serial number doesn't include the style number. The serial number is unique so the stamp was advanced to the next number after each use. There is no problem with the numbers not being entirely lined up. It looks like the last digit wasn't advanced all of the way into position before it was stamped. You can see the bottom of the "8" above it.

For the second one, I don't think it would be that hard to fix it up. You can get help in the rehab thread: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-clubhouse/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-624452-670.html Several of us have fixed up bags in similar condition. I don't know anything about companies that do this. I think this is something you could do easily yourself. Washing the bag would plump up the leather and allow you to reshape it. The scuffing on the leather would be greatly improved just by using leather conditioner. The only slightly tricky part would be to fix the worn through spots on the piping. Several of us have been able to repair spots like this by filling in the area with artist's acrylic paint. There are also leather fillers you could use. If you aren't happy with the condition of the leather, you can refinish it with this product: http://www.wood-n-stuff.com/leatheraid.html

Thank you so much, Whateve. I had no idea about the R&R thread, I am more and more amazed everytime I come to this site, wow the finished products in that thread look so nice.
This is becoming a really hard decision for me now, the Beekman is in really good condition but I have never purchased anything using Skrill (I am assuming it is similar to paypal) and the Essex Bag is also soon to be vintage and can be pretty quickly and pretty cheaply restored using the techniques from the R&R thread and the leather refinish you recommended....
Could I ask which you would choose?

#1 looks okay.

Seller #2, bgeyvanddova08, seems to purposely cover half of the serial number (and creed), presumably because she thinks they're some trade secret. I don't see obvious red flags but I'd like to see the full serial number.

That's a difficult decision. The Beekman is a more classic style. To me the Essex looks more like a messenger bag than a briefcase. It has two turnlocks instead on one which makes it more difficult to open and close. But I like that the design isn't something you see every day. The Beekman is already in great condition and has more sections to keep you organized. They both have shoulder straps and you could remove the Beekman's strap, but I don't feel like you can really remove the Essex strap since the buckles would be flopping, The shoulder drop on the Beekman is a little longer. I think that if the Beekman doesn't get any other bids, it would be a good deal and I would go for it. However, I don't know anything about Skrill. You could ask on the Ebay forum about it: http://forum.purseblog.com/ebay-forum/ I think you could get the Essex for the opening bid amount.

I am thinking that I might want a black briefcase as well and was wondering if one of the authenticators would take a look at this Beekman briefcase for me:

Also if you compare it to other Beekmans made after 1996 when Coach changed the shape of the turnlock and attached leather tab, those shapes are slightly different.

Note that the seller also sold another listing that included a different bag with the same BIN prefix.

I don't recommend doing business with ihavegrace.
Just an update that ihavegrace has relisted the fake bag! Even after it was removed and the seller got an email ebay telling her that it's counterfeit, she didn't care:

Thanks so much for everything Whateve. You have no idea how much I appreciate your input. I am very intrigued by the idea of rehabbing that Essex bag. But your right the Beekman is a classic and would be alot less work. I am worried about using Skrill payment method, but the seller has 100% good feedback so it should be ok. Still not sure which I am going to bid on, I think I am going to just wait and see if its really late in the auction and no one has bid on the Beekman then I will take it, same goes for the Essex. Thanks so much, I will let you know how it turns out after the auctions are over tomorrow :graucho::smile1:

Wow I am so glad that I came here and asked you all to authenticate that bag for me. I was really close to bidding on it. Just another reason why this forum and the authenticators here are so awesome!
