Thanks for the clarification, Whateve! I hadn't appreciated the distinction and will definitely make sure I run things by you guys.

This seller called the bag a Hudson tote:

COACH Black Pebbled Leather Hudson Tote/Purse #6810 ~ XLNT!
Number: 140938889449
Seller: hmgallagher
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140938889449

Looking forward to comments from others
DemRam said it was authentic. You can do a search on this thread for that seller. I don't think I have ever seen them list a fake. Their listings usually have correct information. They seem to know their Coach more than a lot of sellers.

Hi ladies - I have a favor to ask. I know you don't authenticate for sellers, but I have a buyer who insists that a purse she bought from me on eBay is a fake. She started with saying that the tag is fake and that Coach tags don't split (so they have suede backs), which I know is not true.

I asked her to post photos of the bag she received from me to this forum and if there were any problems with the bag that she had my deepest apologies and a full refund. She has not done that and today sent me an email about what the "sales associate" said about the bag. I am assuming she took it to a Coach store. She hasn't asked for a refund and said she gave the bag to her daughter but just wanted to let me know that I sold her a fake. I am just sick that someone would think that.

The completed listing is here.

As I said, I understand if you don't want to comment on the bag but since my buyer wouldn't post photos I would at least like to provide her some expert comments rather than the opinion of a sale associate. And if ther is a problem with the bag I want to refund her money.

Thanks for considering.

Every person on the Coach "Authenticate This" thread will answer from buyers OR sellers. How else do we keep the fakes away?

The bag looks to be authentic. Tell the seller to come here and read. I have NO idea of the name, but I "think" it's from the Hudson line.

Wait for Hyacinth to comment, but don't give in to a ridiculous buyer.
There are other AT subforums where they refuse to help sellers with authentications, but our theory here is that we'd rather keep buyers safe and sellers honest (and vice versa) so as long as someone doesn't do blatant advertising, we usually offer our opinions.

Another thing that you can be pretty sure of here is that none of us ever recommends approaching Coach as a source of dependable authenticity information. Not only are Coach employees not trained to authentic, many were barely out of diapers or not even born yet when some older bags were made.

Since this bag was made in 1999, it's not surprising that the style number wouldn't be in Coach's computer system nor that the SA would be familiar with it. Geez, they're barely familiar with styles that were made in 2010!

Hello!
I need authentication please on a bag I saw on eBay.

Thank you!

Both of them are HIDEOUS fakes in styles never made by Coach - please report.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM kkjohnson18
And 7+ hours later, both of kkjohnson18's fake bags are still listed despite having been reported and posted on the Coach Hall of Shame.

Thanks, BB! You are a treasure.

Your buyer needs to educate herself about classic and vintage Coaches. Older Coach hangtags were made of two separate pieces of leather, stamped wth the Coach logo and then glued together to maker a 2-sided tag. There are a lot of posts here that mention how to glue split tags back together, it's a normal part of owning an older Coach: And Coach has changed the construction, stamping and design of their hangtags dozens of times over the years. There'[s NO way I woukld ever depend on some clueless "SA" to recognize details on an older bag that was probably made when she was still learning to tie her own shoes.

"reply by KATEV:
You don't need a new hangtag just because it has separated. I like to keep the original "parts" with a bag during a rehab whenever possible. That's not a big deal with a black bag like this, but it is very difficult to find an exact match for a replacement tag for tan bags and other lighter colors, because of the differences in color and texture due to wear. When the tag ages with the bag it is usually the perfect match!

I use fabric glue that says it is okay for leather to reattach the parts of an older hangtag. You can find it at Joann's or Michael's or other fabric/hobby stores. I use a sturdy toothpick to smear the glue onto the inner surface of one part of the tag and then press them together, lining up the 2 parts as much as possible.

Then I stick them inside the dictionary to press them together and let the glue "cure" overnight. If it is a light colored tag I wrap it in paper to keep the ink from the dictionary from staining the tag.

Sometimes a little bit of the glue leaks out along the edge of the tag but I just use my fingernail to roll it off the tag."

anyway, thrift store find. i think this is authentic (legacy west?) what do you guys think? i can't find a model with studs though. the little coach hangtag has separated cleanly into two pieces, i wonder why?"
REPLY BY DEMRAM - "Looks good. It's the classic "Legacy Zip" and that one is from 1999. It's still available on the Coach site for $288.

The hangtags sometimes did split in half. I think you can call Coach and have them send you a new one. I have a fabric/leather glue and I've just glued them back together myself."

The bag you sold is a totally genuine tote from Coach's Hudson line made in 1999. All details are absolutely right, and here's Coach's own photo of the style 6810, I think this style was called a Lunch Tote, your buyer's loss is her daughter's gain:

(Edited because "buyer" and "seller" are NOT the same thing)

Comments: Would someone take a look at this bag for me, please? It isn't a style 4157, but does anyone know what it is?
Thanks very much!

ETA: Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am NOT the seller! I just thought this was an interesting looking bag. Thanks again!

It seems like one of the "Flatiron" styles from 1997, the creed does show a style number of 4157 though. The bag looks like a Flatiron Sling, style 4179. The creed is a mess but that doesn't necessarily mean it's fake - those bags during that period weren't well-documented but I've seen a variety of creed styles and even different linings since Coach was trying to get rid of leftover fabrics from discontinued styles like the Sonomas. And sometimes mistakes were made when stamping the serial numbers.

There just isn't enough verified information in my files for me to be 100 percent sure about authenticity. It MAY be, but there are some details like the off-center creed and wrong serial number that would make me hesitate to buy it or to recommend anyone else buy it. (If it's real, that off-center creed and wrong serial number should never made it past Coach's Quality Control, but in the late 1990s the QC people were apparently all on an extended vacation).

The bag looks okay. As for whether it's really new or used, I don't know. You can ask the seller. Although "new" is supposed to mean never used, many sellers describe their items as new when they've been used.

The bag in the listings looks okay but we advise extreme caution in buying from ebay.ph. There are some very "good" fakes coming out of there that require careful scrutiny.
Thanks so much, BeenBurned. Much appreciated!

It's "valid", meaning it may have appeared on a real bag. It's not "genuine" unless the bag itself is, and there's NO way to tell that without photos. Nothing can ever be proven real just from a serial number.

Yes, Thank you. I was not making the assumption that it would, I just could not post the pics until the seller sent them to me in a format I could repost. These are the photos I recieved from the seller:
