Hello,

I have a friend who has a Coach bag that was given to her by a friend, who she is sure bought it at a department store. My friend is selling it to help fund a Christmas celebration for a couple of little girls who belong to a single father (she's like an adopted grandma to them, and they are 4 an 5, so would not appreciate a handbag at this point in their lives)
Anyway, she wants me to try to sell this on ebay, but I would like to know the name, year, etc.
So, is it really authentic, and if so what is it?

Photos are here:

It's genuine but I don't know the style name or any details. Please wait to see if someone else has more information.

Item: Vtg 1960 Navy Blue Leather BONNIE CASHIN Shoulder Bag Purse
Listing number:300824744055
Seller: glogbog
Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-1960-Na...055?pt=US_CSA_WH_Handbags&hash=item460a8d5077
Comments: I am wondering if this is authentic and if so, what is the year? There doesn't seem to be any connection with Coach at all other than the look. I have never seen Cashin's name imprinted on the inside of a purse, but I am new to this.

Any help would be appreciated...

You do realize that this isn't a Coach? I don't know if there is anyone here who can authenticate it or date it. You might have to contact the Bonnie Cashin Foundation. I have never seen a purse with Bonnie Cashin lining.

From what I have read, besides her collaboration with Coach and other designers, Bonnie Cashin started her own studio in the 1950's. You could contact the seller and ask her why she thinks this is from 1960.

Ok, yes, I do realize that it is not a Coach but I thought this was the best place on the site to Authenticate it.

I am right ahead of you; I thought the same thing and I asked the seller why they thought it was the 60's and they said from the style of the zipper.

I have never seen this before either and that is why I thought someone on this forum could help.

Much appreciated.

Are the first and third photos both of the front of the bag? And is there any way to get a photo of the other side? It looks like a style number 40915 Gallery Patchwork Swingpack but with Patchworks seeing both sides would be a big help. Thanks!

I just got one of the back. Hopefully this helps. Thanks so much!:

Hi Ladies!!! I hope everyone ha a great Thanksgiving!!
I was hoping for authentication of this possible Sonoma tote
I am not sure What she would be called but I figure she is from the Sonoma line....
Creed reads : j8h-4316
Which is sorta weird, all my other Sonoma Bags start with 49_ _....
Also this creed doesn't say that the leather is "all weather"
And any insight on the name of the color (if legit) would be greatly appreciated ;)

Thanks! I just wanted to confirm that the picture Coach used on their website actually wasn't correct. That sometimes happens, and those differences have to be checked out. On Coach's site the patch at the center of the left edge doesn't have the appliqued C's, but I found one on Ebay that does and it also looks genuine.

That's why Coach's photos should only be used as a guideline, they're never completely dependable. I'm posting Coach's pic below so you can see what I mean - the one you're buying has the correct patches, Coach's picture doesn't. Several of the patches are different on the production version. Yours is the correct version and it looks genuine.

A few things worry me like the thick font of the serial number - we see that on a lot of fakes - and the inside zipper pull. But if it's a fake, it's a really good one. I've seen other bags from the same line (Coach made 3 or 4 Sonomas late in the production cycle with 43xx serial numbers) and one has the regular "gentle tumbling..." creed and the other has the standard one. The other two were from Costa Rica, this is the first US version I've seen. The color looks like Marigold but was from Fall 1997, not 1998.

I can't be 100 percent sure that it's genuine - those differences in the serial font and the inside pocket zipper pull bother me just a bit. And we've seen so many fakes lately with US creeds and serial numbers starting with J8 (followed by D, H, or Y) that I just don't trust any of them. Wish I could be more certain either way. Another thing that bothers me is the month and year - production of those styles and of all the Sonomas seems to have ended at the end of 1997. I haven't found any Sonomas in any 1998 catalogs and a bag like the one you're asking about with a late 1998 year code just doesn't seem right.

Aweww maaaaaan....
Those are all the things that were bothering me about this bag...it is just SO well made! Well, for $1 it was worth the risk :)

Remember, we really don't know if it's real or fake. I have nightmares that one day I'll find out that all these wonky bags with strange codes and fonts were secretly made for the Outlet stores and that Coach didn't care if the details were right or not and so they didn't bother with putting in the right creeds and numbers. :D

My advice is to keep it and use it, but please don't sell it or donate it.
