Hello! First off, sorry, no photos. I saw this purse in a local thrift store and didn't have my phone with me. It was a stewardess purse, kinda heavy, thick leather, brass feet and buckles. The buckles had 'solid brass usa' on the under side. The shoulder strap looked as it should(I had a stewardess once) and all stitching looked good. I was sold until I looked under the hood at the patch. It had the same paragraph as other bags from that era and underneath that it said 'Made in New York City, U.S.A.'.....but no number, so I left it. (They don't take returns and it was $40.00.) One more thing, the zipper on the inside pocket wasn't one I recognized, it looked like it started with a W and then maybe an i? If this is a fake, it's well made out of nice thick leather. Were any of the stewardesses made during a time of no numbers? If there were I can go back and get it Monday morning. Thank you! Suzanne

It was introduced in 1977 and although I can't find any definite dates for when Coach wasn't yet using registration numbers, from other vintage bags we've seen here it's totally possible that some early Stewardesses didn't have numbers. We've seen apparently valid dates for the stick-on numbers for 1980 so a slightly older bag with no numbers wouldn't be surprising.

Maybe DemRam has more information about the zipper manufacturer. Over the years they've used at least 6 different zipper brands, she may know which one that is.

Thanks Hyacinth! I'll wait and see what she says. They're not open on Sundays so nobody will beat me to it if I want to go back and get it.

I agree with Hyacinth that it's certainly possible to find a Stewardess with no numbers under the creed.

As to the zipper question, I can't think of a brand starting with a WI, though nothing would surprise me about Coach's choice of zipper manufacturers. Unfortunately, most of the bags I've owned from that period have had slip pockets with no zippers at all on the inside.

Sorry, I can't help with this. Will they let you take photos and would they hold the bag for you?

Thanks DemRam. I called them this morning after reading this and asked if it was still there and it wasn't. She didn't sell it this morning so it must have sold right after I was there late afternoon Saturday. Oh well, now we'll never know. I don't know about that zipper either, it was a W and what looked like a small i and then it looked like squiggles, the W is the only thing I can say for sure. Can't say I've ever seen that zipper on anything before. Thanks again!

Comments: Lovely ladies, I've missed you:smile1:, once again, I need your expertise. Anything else you can tell me about this bag after authentication, like year, name etc. would be greatly appreciated! Happy Holidays!!

The bag looks OK and is "probably" a Standard Tote. I have no clue if it's a Cashin design, though I have seen Cashin's shopping bag and that isn't IT.

The information on the ABOUT US portion of that auction page is just not correct. Coach did NOT have serial numbers imprinted on the interior of the bag in the 1960's or the early 70's. The seller needs to send buyers to Hyacinth's guides if she/he wants to quote facts.

Thanks so much DemRam - Any information on the "standard" tote that you have? Yes, I know the guides are off....I'm glad I know that from lurking here!

Are the first and third photos both of the front of the bag? And is there any way to get a photo of the other side? It looks like a style number 40915 Gallery Patchwork Swingpack but with Patchworks seeing both sides would be a big help. Thanks!

Hello,

I have a friend who has a Coach bag that was given to her by a friend, who she is sure bought it at a department store. My friend is selling it to help fund a Christmas celebration for a couple of little girls who belong to a single father (she's like an adopted grandma to them, and they are 4 an 5, so would not appreciate a handbag at this point in their lives)
Anyway, she wants me to try to sell this on ebay, but I would like to know the name, year, etc.
So, is it really authentic, and if so what is it?
