Hi! I buy and sell a lot of vintage Coach, but I have never seen one with three numbers to the right of the hyphen. I received this today and am concerned about the serial number. Even my oldest Cashin totes and NYC bag's serial numbers have four digits to the right.
Attached is my own photo of the creed.
(Thanks so much!!)

Creeds and serial numbers are explained in these 2 Salearea Guides, it would be a very good idea to read them and Bookmark them:
http://reviews.ebay.com/Coach-Creeds-the-Basic-Facts?ugid=10000000030821024
and
http://reviews.ebay.com/Coach-Serial-Numbers-the-Basic-Facts?ugid=10000000034886433

The bag looks like a Small Bucket Bag from the Lightweight line, probably from 1989-1990.

And you may want to read the rest of the Salearea Guides when you get a chance.

I don't recognize the bag - though it looks like a Soho Lightweight style.

The xxx-xxxx VS xxxx-xxx changes in the serial number were made
"maybe" in the later 1980's - 1993.

Wait for others to comment.

Again, I bought this before I ever discovered the site. It just arrived. I'm uncertain if this is even a coach style. Maybe I shouldn't do any more middle of the night bidding. LOL. I searched and found another just like it at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ySiBe1hEDbw%3D&viewitem=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Let me know what you think.

Thank you for your help

They're both genuine Hamptons Small Totes from 1999.

And yes, it's always a good idea to bid ONLY when you're fully aware of what you're bidding on. :smile1:

Thank you, I see now that the guide says the numbers had three ending digits in that late 80's period. All of my Coaches have been older, 70s bags so that must be why the creed looked so funny. It was only a year or two that the serials had three digit endings I guess?

Thanks for the guides, I bookmarked. :)

Hyacinth - thank you so much for your response. It is good to know I didn't flub in purchasing this one too. :) I'm a purse addict and a "great deal" junkie...but, sometimes it can bite me in the butt. Thanks again.

This is less authenticating a bag & more the seller...this just happened today and I'm afraid to go through with this now, you'll see why..... Hopefully it's ok for me to post this here...

Item: Authentic coach brooke perforated leather handbag EUC
Seller: wanaka (only 11 feedbacks, 1 as a seller)
Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/120903453280?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I've been casually looking for a white/silver perforated brooke and found this one. I can't see the scratch mentioned in the description in the photo, but for the price thought a small scratch would be no big deal. Because the seller doesn't have much feedback, I did ask a couple questions, one being the color of the interior.

Me: can you tell me what color the inside is?
Seller: here is a picture of the inside http://i49.tinypic.com/28hkl89.jpg

At this point I am sure it's the right bag, but checked the other auctions that are currently up for the same bag, and recognized the photo - it is EXACTLY the same photo, the shadows/lighting, the folds, the positions of the zippers, the cropping, the black leather something in the background (upper left). Here is a link to the OTHER auction I'm talking about: (see 5th picture in the description)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290674132354?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

So I figured, maybe they are just sending me this photo for reference, which would be OK. So I politely asked another question:

Me: Great, thank you!! Is that a photo of your bag, or just a picture for reference to show the inside?
Seller: I took it of my bag

Great, I didn't expect that. Now I'm uncomfortable. Still trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, I politely ask another question:

Me: The reason I asked was because I see the same exact photo in this auction, is this your auction too? (I wouldn't mind if you had used a picture other than your own for reference, because sometimes it's easier than taking your own photo) (then I linked that other auction)
Seller: no but it is the same bag so in pictures they will look alike.

:( I studied these 2 photos, it's not even possible - the only difference I found was that there is a tiny black spot on the other person's auction that was possibly photoshopped out, and has been resized smaller.

What should I do?

What should I do?

Ask yourself if you want to
a- take a chance on a bag with no creed or interior photo
and
b- give your money to a picture thief and a liar.

If you still want the bag you may want to remind the seller that using another seller's photos without permission is a copyright violation AND against Ebay rules, and that you'd like to see an actual photo of the creed and inside that she's taken herself with, let's say a dinner fork in the photo to prove she actually took the picture.

Thank you! You agree with me it's the same photo right? I am not going to give someone who lied any money, as the next lie would be it was lost in the mail! I just want to be 100% sure I'm not wrongly accusing someone... I stared at those photos for a long time. Funny thing is, I didn't ASK for additional photos - they just sent that, and it's a good thing because I might have fallen for it. Lesson learned to be more careful.

Both look genuine.

Shoe polish will come off/rub off over time. If you get caught in a rain storm, forget it!

Glove tanned leather goes through a special process during dyeing. That is why you should avoid dyed bags because most dyes just put a coating on the leather.

Some sellers use dye or shoepolish to cover up wear and tear and stains. Many times they dye lighter colored bag black because of stains on the bag.

Thanks so much for that information! In the end, I didn't buy the bag because the seller didn't get back to me in time and now I know how to better get information about bags. And knowing is half the battle!

Thanks for the guides, I bookmarked. :)

They probably started the 4+3 numbers around 1988-89 and introduced them gradually over the next few years. A few bags in early 1992 still had the old 3+4 style but by 1993 all serial numbers should have been in the new style.
