Comments: Hi I'm new here, I really want to get into buying classic leather bags. Is this one real? thanks in advance!

Welcome!

It might be the "Convertible Clutch"...probably from the late 70's through the later 80's.

I would ask if the leather is really that "dull" looking or if it's just a lousy camera shot?

We need other opinions. I don't know what that white stuff is or how simple it would be to remove it from the leather.

There are a few "rehab" threads like this one:

http://forum.purseblog.com/coach/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-624452-34.html

You can get lots of expert advice on how to revive and save a vintage bag.

Thanks for your reply!

I'll go and ask about the dullness. Yeah that white stuff almost looks like a bleach stain or something...?? I guess that's partly why it's going for so low so far. I think it would be fun to try to restore a bag though, I actually didn't even know it was possible to do until yesterday haha.

Some bags may be beyond restoration, and the seller's multiple comments about "needing cleaning" and sold "as is" would make me look for a different bag. Leather can actually be TOO damaged to restore and with all the older Coaches for sale there's no sense in wasting money on a basket case.

Not only is the seller not showing the outside of the bag by the stained/dirty area but the leather itself looks dried out. Restoring old Coaches can be fun but you have to choose your projects wisely. JMO.

I agree with Hyacinth. I have attempted to restore several badly abused bags but only if I was able to pick them up very cheap - in case the rehab is unsuccessful.

And there have been other bags that I have just "passed by" because they were in such poor shape.

I think that the starting price on that bag is too high for the condition and it is not a good prospect for a "first rehab" attempt. My advice is keep looking and good luck!

That makes a lot of sense. I was starting to have second thoughts about it too. I'll keep searching! Thanks to all who replied :)

I bought this bag from Salvation Army. Please help me authenticate this!

The serial number reads: 193-2748.

Thank you, Hyacinth, for the taking a look at the pictures and replying. The attachment of the blue purse was helpful, too, but unfortunately I couldn't mag it enough to see some of the detail. I am attaching additional photos, which I am hoping will be of some help. I looked at the zipper and it is a YKK. The pull device at the end resembles another I have seen on a "how to spot a fake" website. I see your point about the color of the zipper, as well as the color of the thread. I saw one of the more recent posts also had a blue zipper with a brown leather.

What did you mean by a "pre-production" bag?

Thanks for your help!

Hahaha. I just noticed the "ignore any RULES..." disclaimer on the bottom of Hyacinth's posts. But only after I had posted about my bag having a YKK zipper. Sorry.

Hello,
I am new to PurseForum but have been reading your past posts about Coach quality, Creed numbers and fakes. You are are an awesome group of knowledgable people! I would appreciate help in authenticating some of my collection.

Item: Red Coach Purse Bag 338-0731
Listing Number: 260828732357
Seller: Porkqueen68

Comments: I realize the Creed number means it was made before 1991 and the last 4 digits are not a model number. The seller didn't have many pictures so I took more of the bag I received.

Thank you for sharing your expertise! :smile1:
