It is black, it says it has lizard trim and made in Turkey. The leather is very soft. Can anyone identify it or tell whether it's authentic? I have wondered for years!

That's not always true.

This particular bag is ok, but Marshall's and TJ Maxx are notorious for accepting fakes for return without checking for authenticity as long as the "buyer" has some kind of receipt and then putting the fakes in stock. Never assume all their name brands are genuine.

I can verify that they do this from working at Marshall's and experiencing people buying the authentic bags and returning fakes with the authentic tags and receipts.

The only records about when styles began are kept by Coach but there might not be any information saved for the older styles like that one.

Sometimes we can find an Intro date for a style from a catalog that shows it as NEW, but even that isn't always accurate. Just like Coach's "Pilot" bags today, Coach used to release very limited numbers of certain new styles six to 18 months before the actual scheduled release of the bag just to gauge buyer response and to get feedback on any production changes potential buyers might suggest, or to correct potential problems or flaws with materials or construction (something that they seem to have stopped doing within the last 10 years, unfortunately).

Serial numbers on their own can never be used to prove a bag is genuine. As BeenBurned said, we need to see photos of the bag and the creed stamp and serial number and probably other parts of the bag like hardware, stampings, plaques, etc. to authenticate Coach bags.

Thank you so much Hyacinth. Will post photos soon.

comments: I'm wondering whether this plum burgundy is an original color for the stewardess bag, since i've not seen it before, or whether it's 'dyed'. also whether you think it is authentic, since it's hard to see the creed. thanks so much

There were several shades like that on vintage Coach bags, but I don't have any names or details on them. I've seen an actual bag in what looks like the same almost-purple color - the bag had a creed stamp but no serial number and was probably from the mid to late 1970s so this may be from the same time period, it's hard to say without a photo of the creed stamp.

Again, without seeing the creed I can't be sure of authenticity, and it would help to see the details right under the flap too.
