Hi, I received this bag, and it looks virtually unused. but i wonder about it. i have two other "musette" bags from old days, one very very old & loved and one a bit less worn. this newest one from ebay seems just different: the leather seems a bit more stiff, it's a very dark brown (i didn't know coach made such a dark brown) darker than my other vintage brown bags. and while the inside pocket on my two original bags (which i bought ?late 70s early 80? cant remember) has leather on the outside, this one has unfinished suede. but the creed looks right, and all the stitching etc is identical. so authentic? maybe a year later? or an amazing copy? how does one really know? the photos on the ebay site are quite accurate.

The Musette was a much earlier design than the Carrier Bag, which was only introduced in the late 1980s. The Carrier Bag was designed first and foremost as a briefcase while the Musette was designed as a large all-purpose handbag. As for colors, Coach has made many shades of brown just as they've made many shades of British Tan. Colors can also change over time and some darker vcolors especially black fade noticeably with use and exposure to light and pollutants. They've also used leather from different sources and it's very possible that leathers on different bags won't be the same. You can't ever compare a bag to a different style or a bag made in a different time period. Remember, using a bag often WILL make the leather less stiff - you said yourself that this bag seems almost unused while your old Musettes have been used often, so doesn't that extra use mean less stiff leather?

As we've said many times before, you can only compare apples with apples, and those apples have to be from the same plant, month and year for any comparison to be valid. A Carrier Bag from 1989 is NOT going to have the same details as a Musette from maybe 10 years earlier. A briefcase won't have the same design features as a handbag.

BTW, I looked at the bag in the auction listing when you first posted and didn't see any problems.

Comments: Is this authentic? Thank you in advance!

It seems to be ok but the seller needs to clarify the serial number or show a better photo of it. The year code looks more like a "B" than a number, and we'd have to know the correct serial before deciding if it's really authentic. And it's actually a Legacy Small Flap rather than a Trail Bag.

Thanks for the info. Will get the serial number from the seller :)

Depending on the bag, and the color, and how used they are, Coach briefcases will have a different feel to them.

I get alot that have not been worn in yet. They almost feel plastic coated and stiff.

thanks so much for both replies. i feel much better. i hadnt realized the carrier was made well into the 80s, so that might account for the difference. both my original bags are 'carrier' as well but bought late 70s early 80s? (same size as this new one) and that's why i was worried about differences in leather, feel, etc. it's been close to 25 years that i've had a "new" old bag!! last time i bought a new coach was probably mid to late 80s. once they went 'mod' i lost interest. now with ebay i've rediscovered a passion for the vintage bags, bad, bad.

Does this look like an authentic bag? I did a search and the seller seems to have some fakes; is that a good reason to avoid it? it's such a cool bag.

OK, when I did a search of the seller here, some negative issues came up. i love the bag though, so am glad it's authentic, albeit probably more than i can afford!!

That seller kristenwestlake has listed fakes at least twice before, including a bag with a known and publicly posted fake serial number which wasn't even stamped in the correct font and with the word "scrtches" misspelled in the creed. Wherever she claims to be authenticating her listings, they didn't do a very good job. A search here of her ID in all forums will give more details.

Here's one of the bags that was discussed:

A photo of the fake creed is below.

Maybe she's careful most of the time, but two fake bags in the space of a month means there is or was a problem. With Fake Coach serial numbers lists posted both here and at Ebay there's no reason why she or someone working for her can't check the numbers. I'd recommend that potential buyers continue to ask for authentication of her listings. Even normally careful sellers can make mistakes.

buckeyebaker, please remember to use the format laid out in Post 1 of this forum for authentication questions. Obviously it's a big help when a seller's name is searchable here. Thanks!

Again, thank you. so are you suggesting i avoid in general buying a bag from her given that she has passed off obvious fakes? or should i be ok with this bag which rem-dam says is a "good bag"? sorry, i'm really new at this. and yes, i will read your post #1 for formatting rules, thanks.

I'm not saying to avoid buying from her. She had several fakes listed during a short period that someone should have spotted, but she doesn't have a history of selling fakes like some other Ebay sellers. I've seen other known and trusted sellers with a fake or two in their listings because the seller-owner of the business has gone on vacation and the employees in charge while the boss was gone were careless or lazy about authenticating bags they bought or were consigned. If that's what happened in this case, hopefully they've learned to be more careful.

I'd just suggest that you ask about any Coaches you're considering buying, not just hers. There's nothing wrong with the bag you asked DemRam about.
