The seller of the Taft hobo provided some interior and creed pics for me.

Do you think it's authentic? Something off about the numbers. The font is weird and there's no hyphen.

I'm getting no pics, just a prompt to sign into Etsy. Can you save one or two of the creed pics to your computer and then use the Manage Attachments link to put them in the post? Usually the mistakes show up clearest in the creeds.

I wonder if the imprint on the bag in question could be the Great Seal of the United States AND made for the US Bicentennial?

The small black and white plaque on that bag would be consistent with the "mark" Coach might have used in the mid 1970'S.

Imprint on bag in question.

Just a thought!

:smile1:

Possible, except for the newer "Reagan Bag" which is too new to have been made for the Bicentennial.

Oh, and this puts a new twist on it - it IS the Great Seal of the US, not the Presidential Seal. Here's the Presidential Seal, the details above the eagle's head are different. So that opens up more possibilities.

Good thinking, DemRam!

Okay this is for the Taft hobo, which the seller claims is 80s vintage and owned by her mother.

Definitely fake - "F" doesn't seem to be a valid plant code, as you said there's no hyphen after the prefix, and the year code shows the bag was made in 2003, regardless of what your seller claims. And the N in "No" is much too old a font to have been used on a bag from 2003. In fact I'd question just about any bag saying Made in the US with a 2003 year code. 2002 seems to be the last full year Coach made leather bags in the US and the year and month code in yours is for August 2003. Barely possible but very unlikely especially if your seller keeps insisting the bag is from the 1980s.

When checking your photos the other day I saw a few small details that were different from my Taft Bag but I thought that maybe yours was an older version and that might explain the differences. The year code makes it a year NEWER than mine and those small details no longer have a good explanation.

I don't remember if you've bought or paid for it yet but I'd advise against doing either.

No, I didn't. I went for the Willis city bag instead, which I had much more confidence in. Thanks. I'm wondering if I should alert this seller that her mom owned a fake, lol.

If someone contacted Coach would they be able to tell what the bags were made for??

They can't even tell the difference in serial numbers of bags made before or after 1994 - don't even TRY to ask them something a thousand times more complicated.

Coach doesnt keep any public records of their history, and Coach should NEVER be used to identify and especially not to authenticate any bag unless only a name is needed and the bag was made in the last ten years.

They should keep records!!! That's disappointing to know they wouldn't be able to identify what I would assume is a rare bag with something so specific on it :(

Probably best not to bring it up. You can tell someone that her ex-husband or ex-boyfriend bought her a fake but NEVER accuse her mother of buying counterfeit merchandise. ;)

Coach has gone through three changes of ownership in those 35 years. And while I'm sure the original owners who built the company would have had records and probably still had employees who remember the actual bags, the new owners only pay lip service to the past when they can use Coach's history to sell more bags - like their "new" remakes of 5 supposedly 1970s-era bags, or their use of Bonnie Cashin's drawings in a line of bags and accessories 2 or 3 years ago. To them, history is just something that belongs in library books.

Comments: I've been looking for a laptop bag and the red color of this just did me in. What is it really called? Are they rare, because this one ain't cheap. :-)

You don't see many of them, there's only one other one on Ebay that I can find. It's called a Colebrook Case and was a bit smaller than a standard briefcase, check the dimensions and make sure it will work for you.

I have a small macbook pro (13") and she's willing to go down on the price a bit. It looks like it's in good shape and I LOVE the red.
