No links! I'm not listing anything without prior authentications, blessings & praises. :)
Ok, the deterring counterfeiters thing makes sense, couldn't figure out why the serial numbers were so cryptic!

A few of us have spent 10 years and more figuring out those numbers and when they actually would have been used. "Cryptic" doesn't BEGIN to describe it!

And any time you didn't actually buy the bag yourself from a Coach store or one of their retail partners like Macy's, Dillards, Nordies or other mid- to high-line department stores, there's always a chance of getting stuck with a fake. Figuring out if if a Coach is authentic can be a very involved process and requires thousands of notes and photo files, and an exchange of information among the specialists involved. It's NOT a job for the faint-hearted. ;)

I must say that morrigan3 was very kind and understanding with me in our eBay communications. I do believe that seeing her on this thread asking questions and her willingness to learn from this situation shows the qualities of a great eBay seller.
Thank you very much morrigan3😀

:) You're welcome. And I do apologize profusely! I would never intentionally sell a fake bag- fakes are gross and TACKY! - and upsetting when you get burned! This one really had me fooled.
Now I hope I don't drive the ladies on here crazy with questions!

:tpfrox:
I thought of printing out the Ebay counterfeit identification, to keep in my bag as reference!
I thought I'd educated myself fairly well on Coach, now I realize I'm a total newbie, and will be apprehensive on future purchases.

It's me again. :/
Hoping to get this authenticated ASAP because I need to pull it offline if it's a fake.
Vintage NYC USA Coach, No 897-9847, large black leather cross-body briefcase/ messenger flap bag.
I confess, if it's a fake I will probably cry. I spent hours cleaning and re-touching this thing. :(
I can provide additional pics if necessary.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Don't worry, this one's ok. It's a genuine Metropolitan Brief, style number 5180 and probably made in 1987. As the stamp says, it was made in New York City. Almost all genuine NYC bags and briefcases were made before 1988.

If you sell it, be sure to get the name, the style number and "made in NYC" or just "NYC" in the listing title. Here's the catalog page from the Holiday 1987 catalog

You don't have to be apprehensive, just careful. If you buy from online sites or auctions, always have it authenticated here first. If the listing will end before you can get an answer, just pass it by and wait for another one. DON'T buy unless the seller shows a large clear readable photo of the inside stamp or patch (the "creed") and the serial number, those are critically important for authenticating. Or contact the seller and ask them to post or send you a photo.

If you buy from resale or thrift shops, always check their return policy. If you can't return something that turns out to be fake, don't buy there. And try to avoid estate sales, yard sales, etc until you're familiar with some of the warning signs and are familiar with the Fake Numbers Lists posted here at tPF by me, and at Ebay by my friend Daria48:

I'll just add a bit to Hyacinth's reply.

I agree with you, Lucylu29 that you got a responsive and honorable seller. There have been previous sellers and I'm sure there'll be future sellers who HONESTLY and UNKNOWINGLY list fakes. And many have been shocked by the quality of their fakes but after being shown what was wrong with the bags and educated by some of the helpful posts here, they've learned from their mistakes and hung around to learn more.

Heck, none of us know it all and we're all able to learn more.

It's the sellers who've been caught, had listings removed and even have been kicked off or restricted from ebay after selling fakes who take their garbage to other sites (Poshmark, Etsy, Tradesy, etc.) and continue to peddle those same POS fakes.

As for printing out the "answers to authenticity questions" thread, I recommend against it. It would be a waste of trees! A better idea would be to bookmark it on your smartphone and use it to research any finds you might consider purchasing.

Thank you for coming here and being receptive to what you've learned.

I'd love your help in ID'ing this bag. I bought it last night at a thrift store and I am hoping it was a good find.

As far as I can tell from looking online it's a Hamptons satchel, but I don't see any in the white and black colorway online.
