Hi, this is my first time posting, I hope I am in the right place. I stupidly purchased this vintage Coach Trail bag 9965, without clear photos on ebay and I'm pretty sure it's a fake. The seller insists it's authentic.

The first picture is the underside of the flap of the black bag that I just got (the tan one is one I own, I tried to show her the comparison). Indentations under the tabs - sure sign of a fake right? The second pic, her black fake- wrong font right? Third pic - my tan one, for comparison.

Can someone authenticate, (or unauthenticate) please? And thank you, in advance.

You're right on all counts, the black one is fake. There is one important detail of the serial number that's definitely wrong as well as having a fake turnlock. Open a dispute if the seller refuses a refund or wants you to pay for a return.

Here's a real one from the same year and plant but just a few months later, so it's a more representative comparison:

Thank you so much! This forum is great!
Clearly, the seller isn't doing thhe right thing, even after being told she sold a fake.

please post the link to the listing and the seller ID.

VINTAGE COACH BROWN LEATHER COIN PURSE BAG POUCH KEYCHAIN
Item 161821397703

There are a few things that worry me, although it's perfectly possible that Coach made small changes to the details over the years. The ring holding the keyring and chain to the purse is an odd shape, the chain is longer than usual, the turnlock with the prongs on the back is unusual, but out out of the dozen or so that I own, one of mine does have that kind of pronged turnlock. The one thing I haven't seen before is a grommet that has that flower-type back. All the grommets on mine are smooth and unbroken on the back. But maybe Coach cut corners or allowed the plants making them to use non-standard pieces if necessary.

The leather texture on the flap is odd, when you look at the back only the center part has any texture and the piece under the flap has none at all, and the texture doesn't really match any of Coach's regular leathers. I'm wondering if Coach used, and maybe even originally intended, those as a way of using up remnants and odd pieces left over from their handbags just like they sometimes did with the inside pockets on handbags.

My guess (and I could be wrong) is that it's genuine but definitely a bit odd, and the shape makes me think it's one of the very early ones. 7248, 53 and 54 were the original small coin pouches that came out in 1995, and the slightly bigger one 7105 that copied the City bag came out around 1996.

Thank you! I have been looking for a nice sturdy city bag for a while and read lots review that the leather in classic comeback series was too soft. So glad I found this one.

Remember, this is one of the Chinese-made ones, not the recent remakes. I'm not sure which "comebacks" you mean but there have been several different recent remakes, and different people here have been happy with different versions. Also, the best way to get a purse soft is to condition it and use it often.

Ooh! Although I can often authenticate these bags, I don't have the knowledge of the names and history as Whateve and Hyacinth have but this is one I know.

It's a Sonoma natural grain drawstring bag.

Comments: The creed code looks off. Definitely would like to defer to experts here.

Thank you so much! Really hope that I can get a hold of a good vintage condition Coach soon.

ALL H8L- serial numbers with "US" creeds are fake. I don't think there even was any plant using the L plant code in 1998, There's a very fake red Willis with exactly the same serial number on Ebay.- they BOTH have the same lopsided underscore under the "o" in "No", the same mistake in the padded part of the turnlock, see the photos below of the fake navy blue Etsy bag and the fake red Ebay one..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Coa...ed-9927-USA-/291560602420?hash=item43e25dbb34

Even more obvious on the blue Etsy fake, the padded area in the leather part of the turnlock tab is the wrong shape, the underflap pocket placement looks off and so does the inside zipped pocket, and the dowel is too thick. The hardware color is either a VERY washed-out brass imitation, or it's actually silver, which wasn't even available with navy blue in 1998.

You can try to report it but Etsy isn't very good about removing reported fakes.

Thanks for the detailed reply to my request. Genuine, but odd: I wonder if the chain and ring could have been replaced at some point?

Thank you for the photos. Now I want the other styles too!
