Coach often used "plastic", usually NYLON, zippers starting in the late 1980s with the Lightweight line.Your customer has been getting inaccurate information. I mentioned this in my Salearea Coach Guides when I first wrote and published them at Ebay's now-defunct Reviews And Guides pages more than a decade ago. Since then I have re-posted them here at tPF and included any necessary additions and corrections, so they are not only the most accurate guide of its kind on the internet but also the most up-to-date of any I've found for the vintage and classic Coach time period.

The bag is a genuine Mercer Bag, style 4131 made in the early 1990s and from the Lightweight line mentioned above. So it has a nylon zipper and probably brass-PLATED hardware instead of solid brass, to help keep the weight down. I hope your customer will use a more accurate source of information about Coach products from now on.

Here's Coach's catalog page for the Mercer from their Spring 1993 catalog, the date of manufacture is 1993:

Hello! I was wondering if someone could kindly authenticate these bags for me. I am curious about the Pocket purse. I only discovered this forum after these purchases. The box states it is a Saddle bag which I don't believe to be original. The title name also lists it as the Penny Pocket which appears to be a mistake. Additionally, the booklet copyright says 1992 which does not exactly track with the research I did on the creed. If anyone could help authenticate this, I would be immensely thankful!

I found a similar fake in my "FAKE UGLY BAGS" folder. No bow, but from the same source as your example with the same fake serial number and creed.

The seller took fantastic photos and from my little knowledge the creed seems right - I was a little confused by the rippled leather at the bottom on the bag, the bottom edges where you can see stitching on the sides, and the turnlock - I wasn't sure solid brass scratches like that. I would love any help - I'm really hoping it's real because it's such a lovely style! Thank you!

Thank you immensely, BeenBurned. I did a deep dive based on what you provided and learned so much! I ended up returning the Pocket purse due to all the inconsistencies. I believe the bag is real but the box is certainly not original and I am unsure about the other accessories. Thanks again!

To be clear, the POCKET purse is authentic. (There's no such thing as a "penny pocket!") And the box (IMO) is authentic but originally came with a different bag. (She doesn't show the label.) The paperwork also appears authentic and was/is probably the same that was included with all bags at that time.

It's fake.

This seller has had multiple fakes on several different sites.

Her previous ID is on ebay appears to be no longer allowed to sell. It appears that that's why she opened this newer ebay ID.
