I haven't looked back at your posts. Did you post the listing? Where did you buy it? How did you pay? When (what date) did you receive it?
I really appreciate you asking about this. This is all on me. One of the issues is I did not ask you to authenticate right after I bought it. I made a quick stop at Goodwill while out holiday shopping and my first mistake is I was in a hurry and I didn’t look at the bag close enough. Then in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I left it in a bag in the garage and forgot about it. stumbled upon it while I was putting away holiday decorations. It was $25 and not that I like to throw any amount of money away, I’m not sure it’s worth fighting it out with Goodwill since they only allow returns within 7 days of purchase. I’m hoping this will mean the vintage Coach gods will make it up to me in the form of a unicorn found cheap in the wild. Sharing the photos as my walk of shame.

ETA The only thing I checked at the time was the style number.

Let them authenticate now! What are the fakeness indicators? (We all can learn!) And I have a question for the authenticators...when there is a solid bar indentation under the entire serial number, does that mean fake?

Well, I first noticed neither of the zippers have stops which I don’t remember where (might have been here) but I read that all coach zippers have stops. The second thing that looks off is the stitching on the flap above the inside zipper. The embossing around the serial number I did see when I bought it because I do always look at that and check the style number but I wasn’t sure about that being I definitive sign of a fake.

Not the correct font for the "C" plant. ALSO, the C plant in the US seems to have been closed almost 2 years earlier.

Probably the wrong creed wording for bags made in 2002

"when there is a solid bar indentation under the entire serial number, does that mean fake?"

Almost always

MOST OBVIOUS - INDENTATIONS FOR THE PRONGS ON THE BACK OF THE TURNLOCK. We've mentioned this so many times before. In vintage handbags (NOT briefcases!) it's almost 100 percent proof of a fake.

The indentations was another question I had. I’ve never seen that so I thought it was odd.

ETA: For me it was the lack of zipper stops and the stitching at the top of the inside flap is wonky.

Check the authentication requirements post at the top of each page. That's why we specifically ask for a photo of that detail.

BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)
  • Measurements
  • For bags with turnlock closures, show pictures of back of female side of turnlock
  • For bags with magnetic snaps, show pictures of the male part of the snap so that the numbers and letters on it can be read
  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.

A tPF search for "Coach turnlock indentations" brings up almost 8 pages of posts that include those 3 words.

I hadn’t asked for authentication on this one which is why I’m stuck with it and feel like a dummy. I started to provide the required info after ConnieinSeattle mentioned it but you beat me to the punch with your reply. I try not to ask questions that you guys have answered a million times. In fact it’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine when people ask a question before looking for the answer themselves. I was curious about the indentations but the other issues were enough to make me sure it was a fake so I just didn’t take the time to search the forum for that info yet. You are a wealth of knowledge and so patient with all of us less knowledgeable coach lovers. I never want you, beenburned or whateve to feel like sharing what you know is being taken for granted. I have much respect and appreciation for you all. Thank you so much!

It's something we have to be careful to not speak about too much in public because counterfeits manufacturers learn what details they need to correct to make better counterfeits when we talk openly about the mistakes they're making (more a problem with recent fakes these days than vintage items), and sellers who think or know that they're listing a fake know what details to NOT show in their listing photos.

So for someone who wants to avoid buying fakes, the safest thing to do is to read this forum on a regular basis and keep notes and photos. There are still plenty of "red flags" that we've never spoken about publicly, even here. The other safe thing to do as a buyer is to always authenticate BEFORE buying or commiting to buy.

BTW, reading a collection of posts about potential problems or red flags like the Search link I posted, once you've eliminated the posts that don't relate to the problem, gives a good overview of what makes the problem complicated in the first place.
