Thanks for responding so quickly regarding my post. Actually, I am looking at two Coach brief cases posted in my local Craigslist. Apparently I confused one with the other and confused you. Here is the link to the Craigslist ad for the bag I really want to buy "http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/clo/5090403228.html". As you will glean from the ad, the creed represents a serial number that has been known to be suspicious i.e. M4N-4154. I was hoping you could provide your trusted opinion as to the authenticity of the bag. I thank you, in advance, for any information you could proffer.

Style number 4154 would NOT belong to anything even remotely resembling a briefcase, In fact according to Coach it belonged to some kind of bucket-style bag but I've never been able to find a photo. And the plant code is also questionable.

And looking at the photo confirms that the briefcase is a very obvious fake. NO briefcase would ever have that style number, the serial number font is much too thick, the stamping is uneven, and there are various details in the stamp that completely contradict other details. AND the word "SCRTCHES" in the creed stamp is misspelled.

BTW, please don't use quote marks around a URL or it won't show as a link. Post all links on separate lines without any other characters in the same line.

Thanks very much for everyone's insight. Due to your keen eyes and vast knowledge, I have been able to avoid a fraudulent purchase and have alerted others as well. The value of these types of forums cannot be overstated. Thanks again!

Thank you, appreciate your input. I have seen it listed in the past at nordstrom.com but there are no available photos of the creed patch there too. Is there a website that I can go to for authenticating the serial no.?

You can't "authenticate" a serial number - just a number without any photos can never prove that a Coach item is genuine. The only thing you can do is compare photos with a creed that's known to be genuine, which is what I already tried to do with no luck. And no, there's no such website or I would already have used it.

Unfortunately, even though members here have posted pictures of the bag itself in the past, as usual no one ever bothered to take a clear photo of the entire creed patch including the serial number.
