By previous posts, I was referring to other older posts where a creed with plant code J8D was fake. And there are quite a few. Additionally, the Salearea guide says that while J8D could be real, it is often found as fake. #39. So 2 data points that would make me think that the bag at issue is fake.

In a previous post (years ago) you provided an image of an authentic J8D as an example. Am I right in that the key giveaway to you is the inaccurate font? I guess with font, if you know you know. And I do not know. But that analysis goes to the second issue. To me the style number looked like 9887. You said 9997. Which would make sense since the bag in the listing is the same style as a #9997 or small legacy zip. But I don’t know styles and my eyes still think they look like 8s. So there you go, my thought process that led to my doubts. I just ignored the wallet.

The font used by the C and D plants throughout much but NOT ALL of their existence is very recognizable, but knowing the exceptions AND also understanding the chance that the digits in the serial prefix might have been scrambled at the plant and how to recognise those examples are both part of being a qualified authenticator. That's why we keep urging buyers and sellers to please leave the authenticating to the experts.

And the actual quote from the Daria48 Fake Coach Numbers List (not the Salearea Guides although both have the same source) is:
"Other prefixes often found in fake as well as real serial numbers:
J4D-

J6D-

J8D- ... "

... so any appearance of those digits means that there's a reasonable possibility that the item might possibly be fake. A wise person should have any of those authenticated. It does not mean that they should assume the item is fake.

It also wouldn't be a bad idea for any regular Coach shoppers to keep photos of CONFIRMED examples of both real and fake Coach serial numbers on their phone or tablet if they do a lot of in-person shopping at thrifts, consignment stores, estate sales, or other places where they don't have a chance to ask for or wait for a formal authentication.

I have a question regarding this authenticity doc from shopgoodwill.com. The GW listed as the seller is in Colorado. The Entrupy certificate holder is Onna Mack/Magnifique Boutique of SC. Date 5/16/22. Shouldn’t GW be the holder of the Cert? Did Onna get the Entrupy auth cert on 5/16 and then donate the bag and cert to GW CO? That seems unlikely.

I also went to the CO cite and it looks like all the Coach bags with Entrupy Auth Certs are held by Onna.
I have no idea who Onna Mack/Magnifique Boutique of SC is but the "owner" or original client to obtain a certification doesn't necessarily own the rights to it. (I've had items authenticated (by a different company) and when I sell the item, I include an unredacted copy of the certificate with my own name on it. Should my buyer ever resell, I don't think she'd be prohibited from using the same certificate should she choose to do so.)

It's possible that GW uses remote listers in other locations and they're the ones who obtain the certificates.

In this case, the bag is authentic and as long as the buyer receives the same bag as shown in the listing, it's fine.

Note that there have been instances in which forged and photoshopped COAs have been altered to be used with fakes. (I've seen fake Authenticate4U and Etinceler COAs.) Why someone would forge an Entrupy certificate given their dismal record when it comes to accuracy is beyond me.

Especially with the recent spate of fakes coming with "professional" COAs, it never hurts to verify authenticity here.

Hello authenticators! I recently purchased this bag on Etsy from a vintage reseller. I just wanted to make sure of it’s authenticity before rehabbing it. The bag seems to be in excellent condition. It is a black station bag. I hope I am posting on this board correctly, this is my first time. Thank you so much for your help!

I am not an authenticator, and I have never seen this bag IRL, but it looks like pictures I've seen of the pre-creed original Bonnie Cashin Coach Body Bag from the early 1970s.

The Cashin sketch below is from the UCLA Bonnie Cashin archives at: https://digital.library.ucla.edu/catalog?f[member_of_collections_ssim][]=Cashin+(Bonnie)+Collection+of+Fashion,+Theater+and+Film+Costume+Design,+1913-2000&sort=title_alpha_numeric_ssort+asc

The idea for the Body Bag was that it hugs the body so you can wear it under a coat or poncho - to foil pickpockets! Bonnie did a different version of the Body Bag for the Meyers Company a few years later. I own the Meyers bag and I love it, but I wish that I also had this Coach version.

What a fabulous find, congratulations!

Thank you and thank you for the link. I was able to find several other sketches and design notes on it with one sketch of the bag tinted in the same color. Thank you again.

Thank you Hyacinth, It’s pretty great to be able to get such in-depth info. After reading about the abundance of fake items I think my tendency to think fake first is a desire to self-protect. There are so many moving parts in determining authenticity and I firmly believe I will never be competent. However asking for repeated authenticity checks with short notice seems so bothersome to you guys.

Hi, I am seeking your expertise on this recently purchased vintage coach item from EBay. I am new to this vintage coach world and am excited to learn more on how to authenticate items. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
