Hyacinth, what’s your opinion on Goodwill online auctions? I always thought they had to do their part to verify a purse was authentic when putting it up for auction on their online site. I see some have papers saying the purse is authentic and then some don’t. Seems like Goodwill makes a lot of money on donated items, they should be responsible for what they put up for auction, well in my mind they should.

Of course they should. But the Powers That Be at GW have decided that their responsibility is covered by using paid authentication services, at least one of which, the one that snookered the media into believing that AI and counting the number of stitches in a bag is sufficient proof of authenticity, isn't competent to authenticate Coach, especially not VINTAGE Coach. Or many other brands either, judging by all the negative posts here about their service.

Goodwill have no concern for the buyers, just the company's bottom line. Many of GW's customers wouldn't know the difference between real and fake anyway, and others might but won't complain. It's cheaper and less effort just to allow some fakes to slip through and issue refunds if the buyer files a claim.

There's an entire thread about Entrupy's many failures here, and in many other posts scattered throughout the forums:

Good morning all, and happy Tuesday!
I’m hoping someone could authenticate the following Patricia bag:
Seller: Consignedforyou on Etsy
Listing # 1195163811

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1195163811/vintage-coach-9951-patricia-legacy-black

thanks so much for your help!
(Edited to correct link)

The link was still wonky for me, but this worked:

It's a genuine Patricia's Legacy from 1998.

Hi, authenticators, I’d appreciate help in verifying the authenticity of this red Binocular Bag (is from 2001. I’ve heard some awful things about Poshmark sellers and want to make sure I’m getting an authentic Coach:
Platform: Poshmark
Seller: wbailey2000

Thank you all for what you do here everyday!

Just to give a quick update, it looks like Goodwill has issued me a full refund for the fake purse. All they needed was the response as to why it was fake and they issued an apology and refund pretty quickly.
I had a similar experience with Goodwill a while back. I bought a vintage Dooney & Bourke right near the end of their auction and it looked ok in the photos. But in my haste to get the bid in, I had forgotten to look for the red, white and blue tag sewn into all D&B vintage bags (it has a unique ID number on one side and on the other it says “Dooney & Bourke” and, if it is, “Made in U.S.A.”)

When I got the bag, the fact that it was missing the tag was a minor sign of a fake compared to the other obvious factors: It looked like the signature oval leather duck patch wasn’t actually sewn on. I pulled on the edge of it a little, and it came right off- it was glued on. The bag itself felt like plastic, not leather. And I compared the metal duck charm which says “All-weather leather” to one I had on another old bag and the color looked different. I took it to the sink and rubbed some Brasso on it and the yellowish brass patina went down the drain. I told the Goodwill people all of this and they said they would refund the money. They asked me to send back the fake bag, and gave me a FedEx label to use. A month went by and they still hadn’t refunded my money, but when I reminded them, they did and apologized for not doing so earlier.

But one big negative about buying in their auctions is that if you leave a question about a bag, it may take days for them to respond. In the past I tried a couple of times asking for additional photos, but never got a response. Now if the photos aren’t there to convince me the bag is authentic, I just move on.

It's a genuine Hamptons Leather Binocular Case made in 2001

Is this an authentic legacy hobo?

There's no way we're going to try to authenticate a highly-faked style without a readable creed stamp and serial number. And I'm not sure why any professional authentication service would either. That COA has no solid basis for claiming that bag is authentic, unless they have access to photos that we don't, which is NOT the way to do business.

That authentication company has been mentioned here before and demanded that we stop posting their company name here at tPF, so you won't find any actual mention of them, and when you try to type their name in a post here, all you get is a line of asterisks.

Hi Authenticators, can you please help me to authenticate this bag?

Item: Coach Court Bag
Where purchased or how obtained : A post on facebook

Comments: Seller has posted a picture of bags she wanted to sell and I saw a coach bag. I requested more pictures from the seller. The bag came with no strap and the one she puts on is not original
