IMPORTANT READ-ME

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread. No PMs please.
For further information, please refer to the first post on page 1 of this thread.

Please follow the following requests:
  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated by searching the seller ID and/or item number. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • Note that authenticators have the right to refuse any requests. This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:
  • FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller and site where listed
    Link:
    Comments:

  • FOR ITEMS NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Where purchased or how obtained
    Comments:
BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)
  • Measurements
  • For bags with turnlock closures, show pictures of back of female side of turnlock
  • For bags with magnetic snaps, show pictures of the male part of the snap so that the numbers and letters on it can be read
  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

Why does the forum allow for some and not others? This Poshmark seller lauds that it was authenticated here.
I like the Poshmark format for buying and will generally take my chances. I have a penchant for the older heavy leather bags. I can only buy with my Poshmark funds. I am not a seller of Coach items - just a buyer.

as experts you are certainly entitled to do or not do whatever you like but I also believe that many of the bags from “thrift shops” “Church sales” etc. are Poshmark bags. Do a Google image search…

thank you for your time just the same.

Welcome.

For future requests, please make sure you read the yellow highlighted post at the top of each page for the required information, including seller ID and link to online listings when items were purchased on online sites.

I found the listing.

seller PatsCloset

When listings have the pictures, it's not necessary to upload them to the post.

The bag looks fine although I believe that the seller "borrowed" a couple of pictures (showing the tape measure with the bag on the striped background) from another source.

If you feel around inside the interior pocket, possibly turning the pocket inside out, you should find a small white tag with two rows of characters/letters/numbers. For a couple of years, Coach used those white labels to replace creed patches.

I get that and respect that. Why not then just ignore those that you won't authenticate? Why the scolding?
Why consider it a scolding? The volunteers who contribute their time and expertise have NOTHING to gain by helping you and other TPFers. If we seller, we can't authenticate our own items and some authenticators aren't even sellers so there's nothing in it for us.

In fact, we don't get any type of compensation from TPF and often, we don't get thanked or we're criticized for not telling members what they were hoping to hear.

If you're risking your hard earned money buying items on a site that is loaded with scammers (often both buyers and sellers) and the site does little to maintain itself as safe, why would you not appreciate the heads up that you might have problems should you receive a fake or not receive the item you bought or (as a seller) have a buyer who ripped you off?

There have been many cases here on the Coach subforum where buyers received obvious fakes and when they disputed those items, Poshmarks "team of authenticators" deemed the item(s) as authentic and denied the buyers their refunds.

In at least one case, Poshmark allowed the buyer to send the fake item to them where their "expert" would review the bag. Even having the fake in hand, it was deemed as authentic but in that case, PM "did the buyer a favor" and issued a refund.

In other cases, sellers were told items were fake, were shown authentications from TPF and other sites and instead of removing the seller's counterfeit items, those members who informed the seller were suspended.

As volunteers, we're allowed to choose whether to authenticate any site, any seller or for any member for any reason or for no reason.

IMO, it's rude to ignore a request as that makes it seem as though it was just skipped and there have been times that ignored posters bumped their requests several times before finally being told they might want to get a professional authentication.

And further, here on the Coach subforum (unlike most other brands here on TPF), we will authenticate for sellers who want to make sure the items they want to list are authentic, private purchases and sales, facebook listings, completed listings, thrift shop purchases, etc.

Other brands limit authentications to active (not-yet-purchased) items only on major sites. They send sellers to pay for private professional authentications as they do buyers who've already purchased items. They don't allow buyers to verify authenticity before paying for items either.

I think we're pretty darned generous with our time (way more generous than my DH thinks I should be) and I reserve the right to recommend against and refuse to authenticate for sites I don't like.

YMMV.

ETA: I promise I won't "scold" you any more - ever!

We're very well aware of that. But we're not mind readers, we don't use lie detectors, and we usually don't have the time or patience to search Google Images for every item we're asked to authenticate, although that's done with some photos if it seems like there's a good reason. We're also aware that some posters have other very valid reasons for not showing the exact source of their items and we act accordingly, especially when the posters have explained the situation to us.

To back up what @BeenBurned said - we DON'T "scold" people for buying from Posh or a specific seller. We warn them about past and potential problems and let them make their own decisions, and can usually refer the potential buyer to specific examples. Again, we're NOT mind readers and don't know whether or not they're aware of the problems or history of the person or site they're buying from. They're free to do what they like but we wouldn't be doing the job we chose to do, which is to help tPF members make SAFE buying decisions, if we just shrugged and allowed them to find out the hard way.

Well it sure felt like a scolding. Nonetheless you are volunteering for a thankless and time consuming position- and I don’t mean to add to that. Truly. I had read on one of the thousands of posts about not authenticating for Poshmark so I added every bit of information that was on the listing without including the listing. Including the listing added absolutely no value to my post. The bag was the bag and I purchased it thanks to your expertise.

But, to have been scolded for not adding the listing and “circumventing” was just arrogant in my opinion.

it is what it is. I will still visit the forums and learn as much as I can and crawl back with my tail between my legs if I need help.

You're missing one - no, TWO important facts. If the bag had turned out to be fake and we had been able to see the listing, it could have been NOT just outed here at tPF with the seller's name and the auction title to warn other potential buyers who use this site and use the SEARCH tool before they buy, but it could also have been reported to Poshmark as a fake. Not that Posh would have removed it, but at least we could make the effort.

As a contrast, Ebay WOULD have removed the item, and so might several other selling sites. Poshmark doesn't give a fat rat's patoot about fakes as long as they can make money from them, but some other sites do, or at least don't like being cut off from payment sites or dragged into court. Some day, Posh's Don't GAD attitude might catch up with them. Other selling havens for fakes sellers have found out the hard way, search Google for " iOffer "
