I think this might be another mystery bag ---- if it's even Coach.

This is from the description which I suspect is total nonsense gleaned from someone's online guide.
"This Coach bag does not have the tag; however, it has the zip slider which is very unique to early Coach bags (9th picture)."

Below is the Q&A from someone who asked a question of the seller and the reply.

It could be Coach but without any markings, it can't be proven. It does have all the style elements of an early Coach bag, and I recognize the style. The paper clip zipper pull is more identifiable as early Coach than this type of pull.

Hi there, can someone please help me authenticate this item? If additional info is needed, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

It's authentic. Reposhing is when someone buys something from a posh member, then later decides to resell it. They are allowed to use the original listing's pictures. I would imagine the higher price is due to the fees the seller will have to pay, which are 20%. You can make an offer to the seller to see if she will accept a discount. Most posh sellers are open to that.

Thanks, I was hoping that interior might give me a clue to whether it might be a large travel clutch of some kind, but apparently not or it would have probably had things like credit card or business card slots or pockets, so it's definitely a handbag style. There just doesn't seem to be any currently available information about it, just the the serial number format indicating it was made in the early 1990s. I've checked all my late 1980s and early 1990s paper catalogs and all the catalog scans posted in the Reference subforum for the appropriate time period. Add it to our Mystery bag family.
Wow I was just talking to my friend about that. I said it reminds me of the men's, women's travel clutch bag but it has the shoulder strap w rings and just the zipper pocket.
Did Coach ever experiment on styles that just did not sell, and so they stopped making them? Or did someone go rogue in one of the factories and made whatever they felt like one day? It is a mystery. Thanks for all of your research.

I'm sure that even back in the early 1990s they were making sample bags, and styles that weren't selling well could be pulled from inventory pretty quickly when there were only a handful of stores compared to today. They probably also made what today we call pilot bags to judge buyer response. My guess is that a pilot bag would only have been released to one or two stores, usually their biggest, and wouldn't have been included in catalogs until and unless they were approved for full production, it would be a waste of valuable advertising space. I bought a pilot bag from the full-price store (they had to order it from NYC or Jax, wherever they shipped from back then) around 2005 and IIRC it was on the website very briefly, which is where I saw it, but I never saw it in a paper catalog. Websites were flexible and easily altered if something had to be changed, catalogs aren't.

But like 95 percent of what I post about the "early days", those are just educated guesses.

Hi—hoping you experts can weigh in on this Coach Willis bag I have in my possession. I purchased it on EBay last month, but am now questioning its authenticity. The exterior measures approx. 9.5” tall to top of dowel x 10.5” wide x 3.5” deep at base. Please let me know if additional photos are needed—many thanks
