Dear Authenticators,
Could you help me authenticate this vintage Coach bag?
Item: Vintage Coach Elliot Sheridan
Seller and site where listed: Maggie on Mercari
Link: https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m49133460421/
Comments: The seller listed it as a Willis, but I think it's a Elliot Sheridan. The creed number of it is 1140-421. I learned from Hyacinth's thread that such format of creed was used during 1989-1994. Just out of curiosity: Is it possible to tell which year it's produced? Thank you in advance! I really appreciate it!

Welcome!

The bag in question is authentic but fabulousfloral does have a bit of history and in fact, this is a post from recently:
Thank you for taking the time to reply! I appreciate your knowledge and info on this !

Genuine Sheridan Elliot Bag style 4235, but it's almost impossible to pin an all-number serial number down to an exact year. My best guess would be 1992-93.

Feel free to refer emotionalbaggageto if she needs information about her fake bag.

Hey~ Shop owner at emotional baggage here..

This thread was sent to me and I feel very hurt. To see this withought me having a chance to defend myself or make this right and instead bashed online is very upsetting.

I struggle with anxiety and depression and this store has given me so much purpose and happiness. Reading these comments.. was very hard for me.

I do not have a business of selling counterfeit items and am a super small online store. So sometimes small things fall through the cracks. However I did list on both my sites in the title that it is awaiting authentication. I did believe it to be real and am going to have it appraised in person by my local consigner first thing tomorrow as I had planned.

Should my sources reveal it is a fake I’ll be pricing it accordingly.

It’s still an amazing bag! I am also fairly new to the business of selling vintage online and still have some learning to do when it comes to designer goods.

I know that the purpose of this site is to educate people on product.. however I feel more bullied than educated on this. I had hoped that this site would be more helpful than hurtful.

I lost my job recently and am struggling to get by. I’ve put a lot of work into my online store and it means a lot to me, so I hope you can all be kind and help me to make this right.

Hi would you please authenticate this bag I got from the Consignment shop? It measures about 13" x 14" thank you

Once again we have to warn posters, old or new, that just because a seller claims a bag is "Bonnie Cashin" or a Cashin design, that doesn't mean it's true! At least 80 percent and probably more of the listings using "Cashin" in them are NOT Cashin designs and sometimes are separated by a decade or more from the time she was actually designing for Coach. Anyone looking for a genuine Cashin design or a bag with a real Cashin connection should always ask here or at the Vintage Photos and Chat subforum in the main Coach forum before spending extra money just because of a name a seller puts in a listing.

As for the bags being authenticated:

1- genuine City Bag 9790 but NOT FROM THE "1968-1970s " period as the seller
" Skyestudios " claims, and AFAIK there's no proof that Cashin had anything to do with the design of the City Bag. At the same time that Cashin was designing for Coach, 1962 to 1974, Coach had their own in-house designer(s) and at least 10 regular bag styles that were from the in-house team, NOT BC.

Not only is the bag probably not a Cashin design SINCE IT WASN'T EVEN INTRODUCED UNTIL 1987, 13 YEARS AFTER CASHIN AND COACH PARTED COMPANY, but it definitely was NOT made in the "1968-1970s" period as is claimed in the listing. Whether the seller is simply misinformed about Coach history or actually thinks that's it's OK to slap a layer of pretty embroidery on historical fact, s/he is way off base on this one. The bag WAS made in NYC like it says on the creed, but it was made in 1987 or early 1988.

2- genuine, probably a 9635 Convertible Clutch and from the early to mid-1980s. The style itself goes back into the 1970s but serial numbers were probably an early 1980s addition although the dates are uncertain. Again, NOT a Penny, or a Pocket Purse, and no proof that Cashin had any hand in the design. Just because it uses a turnlock does NOT mean that Cashin was the birth mother or even the midwife of a Coach handbag.

3- Genuine Basic Bag 9455, Again, the style goes back at least to the mid-1970s but this particular one was made in the early to mid 1980s based on the serial number. And again, there's no proof that Cashin had anything to do with the design. Genuine Cashin designs jump out from the printed page and smack you right between the eyes.

(Rant over ...)
