It was made in the United States. It says that directly in English on the creed (second and third line). The date is coded but the place is written plainly.

I just mentioned that serial number 0974-534 in the Vintage Chat thread yesterday.

I think the amount of water and tree bark etc. they use for vegetable tanning is 100% better than using toxic metals that end up in the soil and in the ocean. Where a lot of chrome tanned leather is made is in China and they don’t have the best environmental protection laws, so it’s worse...

I missed the listing from "Frannie" on Mercari but for the benefit of others who may not have seen a "typical" 0974-534 (or 0974-53X where "x" might be a different number), here's a very clear picture of one where the misspellings are nice and clear.
