Comments: I pretty sure I may have jumped the gun on this one. The bag has no signs of use, the leather is stiff, and the whole bag feels too lightweight. Some of the stitching is done sloppily and the zipper feels cheap. The creed stamp is a bit off center and slightly askew.

Here are some additional pictures I just took:

Your spidey sense is correct. The bag is fake and in fact, matches perfectly to the creed, irregular stamping and serial number on a fake that was posted here several months ago and was incorrectly "authenticated" by Entrupy. (I don't believe it's actually the same bag as the markings/scratches are different but it certainly was made at the same time.)

Wow, that sure looks like they came from the same manufacture. Thanks for confirming, BeenBurned!

Hi Hyacinth, I'm just chiming in because this is my listing, and if the strap is not original, I want to make sure my listing reflects that. I do believe my listing features the Small Swinger 4080 - which has different dimensions than the catalog picture above for the 4040. The listed purse is 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" x 3" and not the 12' x 8 1/4" x 3 1/2" for the Swinger above. So the single strap on the larger purse would make sense, but the rolled double-strap on the smaller bag could be authentic. Indeed I did have the bag authenticate here when it came into my possession. I don't have a catalog reference for the Small Swinger, but Sacs Magnifiques ( who I think is Debbie the Restorer who works for Coach) has the sister to this exact style bag, with the rolled double strap, currently listed in her Etsy shop.

I value your expertise, and the expertise of all the authenticators who give their time on this site. I just want to be very clear in my listing. Is the double trap original to the Small Swinger bag? If in question I will alter my listing to reflect that. Thanks in advance for your time.

You're correct, I forgot all about the Small version and didn't take the time to double-check the measurements of the standard version to the measurements in your listing. Usually in vintage bags when Coach did 2 different sizes they usually kept the two style numbers within 5 or 10 numbers of each other and they're easier to spot when I go through my list of style numbers. I'm sorry for the mistake, the double strap is absolutely correct for the style. (I didn't notice until just now that I didn't even have a photo of the Small version in my files, so I've corrected that mistake too.)

Here's the 1989 Spring Preview catalog page with both for comparison if you want it for your records:

Thank you for taking the time to look at this, and for the catalog photo. I've never seen this bag in a catalog and and I'm so pleased to see a reference to this style! I will certainly keep it for my records. Thanks again!

Hi there,

I saw this Soft Satchel online and wanted to know if it was authentic. I have never seen a "made in USA" part of a creed.
Thanks in advance!

The Made In USA creed is fine, that stamp was used mostly in bags from one specific plant that made the Lightweight line in the late 1980s, which fits perfectly. The seller didn't give any measurements but it looks like a style 4055 Soft Satchel from the late 1980s Lightweight line if it measures about 12x8x5 inches. It's genuine.

Hello,

Please review and let me if this anniversary version of the New Willis is authentic. Thank you.

I believe it's genuine but more opinions are welcome.

The ones made in 2011, the actual 70th Anniversary year, included a special stamped leather hangtag, a metal Coach design charm, and a matching leather tassel, but this one doesn't seem to have that, maybe because it was made in 2012. Or maybe it had them originally but they were removed by an owner, which happened often. Here's what the early versions included:

There were several combinations of creeds and extras during that 2011-12 period and I'm really not sure what was included and what wasn't.

In one of the photos it looks like the metal charm might still be on the bag but I don't see the tassel or the leather hangtag. I remember that there was a bit of confusion here at tPF about what was supposed to be part of the Anniversary package and what wasn't, and for how long. I never did figure it out, by May 2012 even the creed wording had gone back to the standard "superior craftsmanship". :confused1:

ETA - Here's a 7-page thread from when the style was first released as a Pilot bag:

I can agree that the bag is authentic. I don't know (either) what came with it and what didn't.

Thanks, BB. The only bag I ever got from that New Willis line was the City Willis remake so I didn't really pay attention to the smaller bags. Still have it too, it makes a cute Fall bag. Maybe next year once things are safer I'll bring it out again.

Ok. The Pilot bag is the one I remember and I now want. The one that I was reviewing had the correct creed but it looked as if it was missing the anniversary tag. I did not have time to email shop goodwill as the auction was ending. I will keep looking; better safe than sorry. Thanks for your insight.
