Comments: This is my first authentication. I really hope this bag is authentic and very excited about this purchase. I won the bid but haven't paid yet. I've really enjoy learning from everyone here.
Please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Welcome to tPF!

It's genuine and made in 1998. It wasn't called a Kelly Bag though, I think that Hermes owns the rights to that name. It's actually called a Bridle Top Handle Bag.

Nice find! I keep my eyes open for Italian Coach bags and you don't see the Bridle bags come up for sale very often.

No, they and the Gramercy line were what I think of as the "last gasp" of the highline Italian-made bags, before most production made the Y2K jump to China. A few of them were even made in two versions, a calfskin-pigskin combination and a calfskin-only version probably geared mostly toward international Mid- and Far-East buyers. Note the differences in the creed wording and the leathers used on the side panels that would be pigskin on the standard version of these Bridle Top Handles:

THere are many listings -- not my taste but not as bad as the previous paintings!

I didn't go through all the listings but none of those I looked at could be authenticated from the pictures shown.

ETA: I just looked at this listing and the bag is authentic.

She may sell authentic Coach bags but IMO, they're fugly and ALL her listings should show creeds to prove whether they're genuine.

Thanks for the great information and pictures @Hyacinth; you've got a very nice bag @Serena Shaw!

I meant to post this in the vintage chat site. My apologies. I found the holster inside the bag particularly weird.

Hi,
Sorry I didn't follow the guidelines!
I bought this purse at a thrift store.
I re-sold it myself, thinking it was real after doing research myself online, but the purchaser has questioned the authenticity and I want to do my best to follow up - in case that is true!
Thank you!

No problem. We (in the Coach subforum) do authenticate items that were purchased elsewhere; we just want to know.

I'm sorry but the buyer is correct that the bag is fake. THe style number is incorrect for the style of the bag you sold and the creed/serial number has the wrong font for the year and plant in which it's claiming to have been made.

I don't know how long ago you bought the bag from the thrift store but if it's not returnable, IMO, it's a waste of money for you to pay return shipping to have it shipped back when you can't (legally) resell it anywhere.

If I'd sold the bag, I'd just refund the buyer and tell her to do with it as she pleases but to please not donate and not keep it in circulation.

OK, thank you! That makes sense about refunding and not reselling of course!

Just a follow up question about the serial number not corresponding to the style of bag:

This website :
https://vintagecoachbags.com/index.php/authenticity-guide/
says:
Mid to Late 1970s

Under the Coach® Creed is printed: “MADE IN THE UNITED STATES” or “MADE IN U.S.A.” (This change is because Coach® began to manufacture bags in other locations within the United States, besides New York City.)

Serial number contains seven numbers in the format: xxx-xxxx.

The serial number is unique to each bag and does not correspond to the style number.

Is that correct?
