hello. ebay says that this bag is a fake. i've been around coach bags my entire life and i'd bet my life that this bad is authentic, but they say they know for a fact it is fake. i'm at a complete loss here.

Ebay is right. You shouldn't have bet your life. A better creed picture would help. I bet it says made in the US, and the prefix is J8P. Even without the creed, I could tell it was fake by the shape of the padding over the turnlock.
It's always a good idea to verify authenticity BEFORE listing any item you didn't personally purchase from a legitimate department store or manufacturer's outlet.

And here's a right-side-up creed:

If you want to sell or donate, cut the creed from the pocket and dispose of the hangtag. As long as there's nothing on it that says or implies that it's Coach, you can sell or donate the now-generic bag.

We never recommend re-donating a bag with counterfeit markings as the store will just resell it and another buyer will be fooled. The cycle will continue.

i always get rid of the hang tags when i get a coach bag. cutting the creed would seem impossible as it would put a hole in the bag. i'll keep it around and try to use it and just throw it away if i don't want it around anymore.

i guess it makes sense for a lot of coach bags to be fake. i was in the car parts business for about 20 years and many of the parts for sale online were fakes, so why not these bags as well? i guess what got me here is that the bag felt and functioned so well. fakes usually simply ooze "i am garbage" and i did not get that feeling at all here.

i'm glad i found you guys as i was about to get in a giant spitting match with ebay. it's terrible when you get into a spitting match and turn out to be wrong

I was curious as to authenticating smaller items. I know now to check for the inside tags if the item doesn't come with a creed. Does that also act as a giveaway, if the item doesn't have a tag inside, aside from the "made in" tag?
I was in a thrift store today and came across several (supposedly) Coach wristlets, and I only think one had an actual tag with numbers inside. All were cloth with leather accents, instead of full leather or canvas. Just curious!

Most Coach items don't have the tag with numbers inside. They only have used those tags with numbers recently. We can authenticate small items based on the details of the item, including the made in tag.

this is real maybe?
It looks okay. Is there a number in the space below the creed, or has it fallen off? In the future, try to clearly show the entire creed, including the number area and any other stamps near the creed.

I've had the cloth on the zipper fall apart like that. It is impossible to repair. Replacing the zipper costs too much.

Thank you for the reply! I didn't know that was a recent thing. That's interesting to know.
Now I'm curious about the wristlets. None of them were for very much, so I might duck back and grab the one I like the best and post it it. I'm very interested as to what the made in tag should look like!

whatever number there was below the creed, it is gone now. there is a space for a number and it says "coach bag registration number" below itk but there is no number in the space

It had a glued on patch with the serial number on the patch. They often fall off. (The attached picture shows what it used to look like.)

It looks like the bag is a basic bag, also called zippered clutch and is from the 80s. It's not "Bonnie Cashin era" since it was made long after she left Coach.

yes, it looks as if that number has fallen off. when did coach stop making stuff in NYC?

i know little about this stuff. i remember as a kid, coach was hightly regarded and then my ex wife had a thing for coach bags. so when i bought bags, coach was the only name i knew, so i'd buy coach.

anyway, i'll get some more pictures up in a few minutes
