Hi all -

This is fake, yes? From Goodwill with a coa.

https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/78701069

First I want to point out something that we've been tracking over the last year about several well-known, or at least well-advertised, "authentication services" used by Goodwill and other companies. More than half of them aren't worth the paper they're printed on bcause in about 7 out of 10 cases their "authentication" is wrong. And that's a darned poor percentage when you consider that theoretically they should have a 50-50 chance of being right if they simply flipped a coin.

This particular bag happens to be genuine but I'm sure that Entrupy didn't use any VALID authentication techniques in determining that, based on what we've seen from them before where they couldn't even be bothered to look up the bag's style number to see if it was valid and belonged to the style being examined. So this time they got lucky.

Now, if they want to include in their authentication (BEFORE we post it here at tPF!) that it's a genuine style 4055 Soft Satchel from the Lightweight line and made around 1990, then they would at least have the start of a claim to being accurate authenticators. Until then, their COAs are more useful being stashed in the small room in folks' houses with all the porcelain and tile and shiny fixtures to be used in case the other kind of paper runs out.

BTW, if you've not seen a serial number with that pattern before, you REALLY need to start spending more time here.

JMO, your mileage may differ.

Just when I think I'm starting to get the hang of recognizing the fakes! Oh well...at least I learned some things. Thanks for the info!

Hi. I’d appreciate it if you would authenticate this for me. If I’m not mistaken, I read here somewhere that the Tate is often faked. The photo isn’t the best but when I improved the exposure, “Coach” looked a bit off to me. Hopefully I’m wrong because I love that bag in green! Thanks for your help.

Here's an example of a really dishonest seller who tried the same trick 6 years ago, but apparently she saved seven or eight "Coaches" that she KNEW were fake and dumped them in a large lot of bags on an unsuspecting buyer. Posts start here (2 posts)
https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/authenticate-this-coach.818914/page-60#post-24780438
and continue through June 15, 2013 with more posts about that fake listing here on page 2 of tPF's search page;
https://forum.purseblog.com/search/...akes&t=post&o=date&c[node]=29+284+114+113+129

I hope you can find the time to read it.

In all, I think the unlucky buyer got EIGHT fake Coaches in that lot, and the reason the total wasn't higher was probably because a genuine bag actually was included, but it was in an older and unusual style that the seller probably thought was also fake. This is why buying highly faked bags in "lots" without a way of authenticating them can be risky and should be left to the expert buyers and expert authenticators. Unfortunately the buyer bought them to resell and some had already been passed on to other buyers so the original seller refused to take the remaining fakes back. I don't remember what the final resolution was, but this gives you an idea of what can happen.

Eventually the crooked seller was banned after many name changes from Ebay (2 or 3 times!), Tradesy, Etsy and heaven knows where else. Ironically she still apparently has her day job of selling real estate in the Cincinnatti Ohio area. Heaven help anyone who buys a house from her.
Oops, I missed seeing that @Hyacinth had edited her post to mention Botticelli4grace, a now-NARU ebay member.

Although that particular not-recommended ID is no longer necessary to worry about, it should be noted that (in violation of ebay policy disallowing suspended members to open or use a new ID) she IS still selling on ebay, now using collectibleonceloved as her selling ID.

And not surprisingly, she's still listing fakes (on occasion).

Comment: I have no idea what other pics you need here and if I need to ask for additional pics let me know.
If there's a creed, please request it. Also, if there's a made in label and a tag with production info (in the pocket), pics too. (I don't know what this style of bag has as far as creeds and labels so I'm requesting all possibilities.)

It looks good, made in 1995. The style name is TAFT, not Tate.
